Education Corner -with JB: Happiness Advantage Tidbit
As I was reading Shawn Achor's The Happiness Advantage, I felt compelled to share what I learned this week.
According to Achor (2010), " When our brains constantly scan for and focus on the positive, we profit from three of the most important tools available to us: happiness, gratitude and optimism" (p.97). Believe it or not, we can train our brains to be more positive and, therefore, reap the benefits that are identified in the book The Happiness Advantage. One strategy that Achor provides his readers is the "three good things" list.
Too often we focus on the negative, the things that go wrong, ignoring the many positives that we encounter each day. By creating a "three good things" list, we can retrain our brains to focus more on the positive, rather than on the negatives in our lives. Achor concludes, "One study found that participants that wrote down three good things each day for a week were happier and less depressed at one-month, three-month and six-month follow ups. More amazing: Even after stopping the exercise, they remained significantly happier and showed higher levels of optimism" (p.101).
Give it a try! Share with your family at dinner or a co-worker during plan. (Accountability partners help) Reflect on the previous 24 hours and scan the day for positives that you can share and keep at it for a week or longer.
Here is my first attempt:
1. I'm thankful for church and the chance to rejuvenate.
2. I loved the wonderful breakfast my wife made and we shared as a family.
3. I'm thankful that I have sick days to take when needed and that the McClure staff is understanding of my inability to come to school twice last week!
