Fundraisers
- PTO APEX Fun Run (September)
- East Pie Fundraiser (October)
- PTO Chili Supper and Auction (March)
Our East Pie Fundraiser is just around the corner, and the answer to your holiday dessert needs! It will begin October 3. All orders and money are due on October 14. Pies will be delivered the week of November 14. We are asking each student to sell 5 pies. This will help us reach our goal of $14,000. This money goes directly into our student and staff enrichment fund. Money in this account is used for student games, spirit ticket prizes and experiences, MAP assessment snacks, and staff treats.
We do have a few fun prizes built in!
Top 5 individual prizes: iPad, 32” Smart TV, $75 Ultimate Air Gift Card, $50 Marcus Cape West Cinema Gift Card, $30 Walmart Gift Card (top seller gets first pick, second place gets second pick and so on).
Top selling classrooms: pizza party and the teacher receives a $200 voucher to use in her/his classroom. 2nd place classroom: donut party and teacher receives a $100 voucher to use in her/his classroom.
Each student who sells 5 pies will receive an extra recess with the principals.
Not into fundraisers? No problem! We have an opt out option if you would still like to help our school. You can find all details on the fundraising letter going home on October 3. Thanks for considering!
Join us for Lunch Bunch!
Wednesday, October 5
- Kindergarten: 11:00-11:40
- 2nd Grade: 11:45-12:25
- 4th Grade: 12:30-1:10
Friday, October 7

During this time, you are able to enjoy lunch with your child picnic style out on our large playground. You can bring lunch for you and your child, or your child can get a lunch from the cafeteria. We do have a few picnic tables outside, but we encourage you to bring blankets and/or lawn chairs. You can arrive as early as five minutes prior to the event to get your area set up. As students begin to head outside, they will meet you. When you are finished eating, feel free to play with your child at recess.
Once the event is over, we ask that you allow your child to line up with their class and head in. Parents are asked to exit the playground using the gate at the southeast corner next to the building. We hope to see you all soon!
Scholastic Book Fair October 3-7
East Elementary PTO
Ghosts, Goblins, & Ghouls– Oh my, it’s October! While this announcement may remind you to find a costume for your kiddo, there is even more on the forefront.
DID YOU KNOW… October is loaded with PTO sponsored activities and events.
Parent Teacher Conference Meals: On October 20th and 25th there is another opportunity to treat the educators of East. PTO will be providing the main meal on these evenings, but we will be asking parents to contribute desserts, sides, paper products etc. Our teachers and staff are fabulous, but an empty stomach can turn anyone into a monster. Just click on this link to sign-up: https://signup.com/go/VtqyKXu
Trunk or Treat: Back by popular demand is the 2nd annual “let’s get these kids sugared-up” event. While the students will be thrilled with every Twix and Twizzler collected, last year’s parents reported the real treat was seeing little Pikachus, Pirates, Princesses, etc. solicit them for sweets. As much as the kids would love an endless supply of candy we only have 58 spots in the lot and will need everyone to sign-up in advance. You can do so at the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScLt0N5QjpIF0eClQNl4fPD0ubhe2y4aNfFRC1n9wFkWlsu_A/viewform?usp=sf_link
Papa John’s Give Back Night: Teachers aren’t the only ones with an easy dinner option the Thursday night of Parent Teacher Conferences. On October 20th Papa John’s will be giving 20% of designated sales back to the school. The only trick– you have to mention East Elementary. A flyer with more information will be coming your way soon.
APEX Fun Run: Tricked you! This already happened. But really, we wanted everyone to know this event was a HUGE success! We raised more funds than we have with Otis Spunkmeyer in the past. Plus, from what we hear, our students loved everything from running to Jogging Jim! We will go over more details and feedback from this event/fundraiser at our next PTO meeting on Tuesday, November, 8th. Please come. Getting involved isn’t scary. It’s actually a real treat!
We are having a Trunk or Treat Friday, October 28!
We are excited for this fun event and hope you are able to participate (sign up using the link above)! Grade levels will take turns walking through the Trunk or Treat, so you want to plan to be at East from 12:30-2:40. Parents can begin decorating their trunks around 12:30, and we will start a grade level through at 1:00. Every 20 minutes, we will send a new group through. We have approximately 440 students, so please plan to give each student one piece of candy. This event is weather permitting. If it is raining, a School Messenger text will be sent, and the event will be moved inside. All you will need is a lawn chair and your candy! If you have any questions about the event, please contact the office. We do ask that all students stay at school until being dismissed at the end of the day. Thank you for understanding.
Artsonia
I hope you have enjoyed getting to see your child's art on Artsonia, because I sure have enjoyed helping them make it!!! I post a photo of all of their finished artwork so you get to see it as soon as they make it. As a bonus you can buy items with their adorable masterpieces on them (coffee mugs, ornaments, coasters, greeting cards, etc.)! If you are looking forward to the holiday season, be sure to keep this program in mind for one of a kind personalized gifts! Our school gets 20% back from what you spend on the website and last year alone we raised over $1000! Thank you so much for your support and for sharing your little artist with me!

Mrs. Moyers’ Message
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. One of the first steps to preventing bullying behavior is to ensure that both students and adults understand what bullying is. Stopbullying.gov defines bullying as “...unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time.” (https://www.stopbullying.gov/what-is-bullying/index.html) A few years ago, the students and staff at East Elementary voted to adopt a definition that had the same components of that definition but that would be easier for our K-4 students to understand and remember. The East Elementary definition of bullying is “When someone is being hurtful or harmful to you, on purpose, over and over and over again, and you can’t get that person to stop.”
Bullying is a very serious issue and so it is important that we are all aware of what it is (and what it isn’t) and to use the term correctly. If you feel your student is involved in a bullying situation, do not hesitate to contact me (jmoyers@jr2mail.org). You can also fill out this anonymous online bullying form here or by going to the Jackson R2 District webpage or the East Elementary webpage and clicking on the icon that says “Stand Up, Speak Out”.
News from the Nurse
We appreciate everyone keeping their child home when sick!
Please continue to screen your child before school, and keep your child home if they are sick. Remember, our policy is 24 hours free of vomiting, diarrhea, and fever (without fever-reducing medication in 24 hours). Other symptoms need to be improving in 24 hours before your child can return. Try not to give Motrin/Tylenol because it can mask a fever (the medication takes the fever away so it is unknown whether your child had a fever). Jackson R2 considers a temperature of 100.1 or higher as a fever.
If you are questioning whether your child has Covid you can contact your healthcare provider for further instructions. Symptoms of Covid: cough, difficulty breathing, loss of taste/smell, fever (100.1 or higher), congestion, runny nose, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, pains. There is no longer a Covid Coordinator so please contact tborgfield@jr2mail.org or aboss@jr2mail.org if your child tests positive for Covid. We are no longer contact tracing (if a close contact please monitor for symptoms). We are only tracking positive cases.
Don’t forget to clean those water bottles daily (hot water and soap) to prevent strep infection! and continue to WASH YOUR HANDS (that is the BEST way to prevent infection)!!!
More important information:
On Thursday, October 20th, the Cape County Health Department (CCHD) will be at East in the morning (only) to give Flu Vaccinations. They will only have shots (no nasal mists). Early Childhood students will need to have a parent/adult with them. Watch for the consent forms to be sent home the week of October 3rd. The cost is $25, or free if you have MC. Checks should be made out to CCHD. New this year: CCHD is also accepting private insurance! *All flu vaccination forms need to be completed and returned by Oct. 19th at 8am for CCHD to review. Only students with a completed permission form and payment attached (insurance/check/medicaid) will get the vaccination.
Here are the following links to the CCHD letter/forms if you would like them now:
Dental Screenings for all K-4th graders will be on October 28. Only those who return the permission form with a “yes for varnish” will get varnish. (Everyone will be screened.)
LICE! We wanted to make sure everyone was aware that if you would receive a notice, the dreaded lice letter, in your child's backpack to please check their head. Furthermore, it is also a good idea to periodically check your child for head lice (the earlier lice is discovered the easier it is to get rid of!). What if your child has it? Please alert the nurses, Tosha and Angie, so we can help! We want to prevent the spread of lice, and we can only do that if we are aware that your child has it.
Thank you,
Nurse Tosha Borgfield and Nurse Angie Boss
