Principal's Point
I hope you and your students have had a wonderful return to school this week. At North we have been going over all of our SHINE and classroom procedures, picking out books, thinking about mathematics, and getting to know one another.
I am sure your students are tired from this week, I sure know I am.
As you all know we utilize SHINE for all of our procedures here at North.
It is our positive plan to work with all of our students. Each letter stands for something different and is how we describe how to act in all areas. The acronym stands for S. afety First, H. ave respect, I.nitiative, N.orth Way, E.xellence.
During the first few weeks of school, along with teaching Math, Reading, Writing, Science and Social Studies, we focus on our SHINE procedures teaching our students what each of these words means in different areas.
Why do I bring this up will today I want to talk about conversations about school. When you think of parent involvement, do you picture families volunteering in classrooms? That's one way to help--but research shows that supporting your child's education at home is even more important.
Here are some conversation starters that will help you stay involved!
- "So tell me about how you practiced Excellence today". This start connects the student to the SHINE procedures and as they learn will be more insightful of how your student has practiced their SHINE behaviors.
- "Show me what you have for homework"--It's your child's job to do her homework, but you play a role, too. Make sure they know what they are supposed to do by having them explain the assignment to you. After they finish their homework, glance over the work to see if it is complete.
- Encouraging reading and listening skills by reading aloud to them and letting them know you read too. “Let's see what you brought home tonight"-- Look at completed work to find out what your child is learning and how well they are doing.
- You could comment on their math work or social studies project for instance. ("You sure know a lot about our state's history") .
- Also, respond to notes from their teacher, and send notes back if you have questions.
We look forward to having a great year of learning and fun!
SHINE on!!!
Sincerely,
Mr. Lugo

Mr. Lugo's Brainbuster
What is the Name of Our Polar Bear Mascot????
When you know the answer to the brainbuster, write it down on a piece of paper (make sure to write your name and teacher on it too), bring it to the office, and put it in the brainbuster jar. At the end of the week, Mr. Lugo will pick one from the jar. The winner will choose lunch from any fast food restaurant and eat with Mr. Lugo!

How to Cope With Back-to-School Anxiety
Know the Signs
Some worries are to be expected. It’s not easy to walk into a new classroom with a new teacher and start from scratch every year. Watch for these symptoms of anxiety as the new school year begins:
- Changes in eating habits
- Sleep disturbance
- Clingy behavior
- Meltdowns or tantrums
- Nail biting, hair twirling, skin picking
- Headaches or stomach pains
- Avoiding normal daily activities
- Increased irritability
- Increased crying
- Social isolation
How to Deal with Back-to-School Anxiety
Consistency and routines are always a great place to start when it comes to squashing those back-to-school worries. Try some of these strategies to help your child ease into the new school year.
- Attend school every day – avoidance of school will only increase and reinforce your child’s anxiety
- Get back to basics – anxiety can cause kids to struggle with sleep and eat a little less. Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep and eats balanced meals.
- Allow extra time in the mornings – anxious children don’t like to be rushed or be late. Allow plenty of time to eat breakfast, get dressed and get to school.
- Listen – take time to listen and help your child come up with strategies to solve problems. It will help him/her feel more confident.
- Role-play – Practice with your child taking control of worrisome situations.
- Seek help – if anxiety persists, seek help from a school counselor or your doctor.
