Controversial Topic Reminders for Staff - Policy 4-56 and Policy 6-8
It is critically important that teachers and staff understand these policies and what they require of them.
Policy 4-56 - Duties and Responsibilities of Professional Teaching Staff include:
- Teachers are responsible for providing instruction that is educationally sound in an atmosphere of mutual respect and courtesy.
- Teachers shall be mindful that they are role models to students and shall conduct themselves accordingly.
- Teachers shall be mindful of students' age, gender, culture, socioeconomic status, religious viewpoint, and other differences, and shall approach controversial and/or sensitive topics in a manner that is consistent with approved curriculum.
While not specifically stated in policy, it is important to remember that everyone on our staff hold a position of perceived power and influence over students. The courts have held that teachers cannot let their personal beliefs interfere with their obligation to deliver the school’s curriculum, and they may not hijack the curriculum or use their position as teacher or staff member as an opportunity to inculcate students to their personal beliefs. Therefore, while teachers and students may appropriately engage in political conversations as part of curriculum objectives and assignments, they should remain neutral and unbiased and not share their personal opinions or make negative political comments.
Controversial Issues are defined as: (1) any problem that society is in the process of debating; (2) any problem for which more than one solution is being supported; or (3) any issue that may arouse strong emotions.
These issues may be a part of the instructional program only when they are germane to the subject being taught and only after consideration has been given to the age and maturity of the students. No individual may impose personal views on the students, and a balance must be maintained through the presentation of all sides of an issue.
The policy also notes that students shall have the right:
1. To study at the level appropriate to the student's age those controversial issues germane to course objectives. These issues include, but are not limited to, those that have political, economic, social, scientific or moral significance.
2. To have free access to major ideas and information related to the topic.
3. To study under qualified instructors in an atmosphere free from bias, prejudice and intimidation and to form and express opinions on controversial issues without jeopardizing their relation with the teacher or the school. This provision does not imply license to infringe on the rights of others.
Finally, let Mrs. Metzger or Mrs. Lewis know in advance if you plan to conduct lessons with potentially controversial and/or sensitive topics (or even wondering whether it is sensitive or not) so that we can support you according to the requirements in Policy 6-8: The approach of the teacher to controversial issues must be impartial and objective and must include balanced assignments of materials. Before introducing materials to the class, the teacher must discuss with the principal those materials that the teacher believes might contain potentially objectionable language, concepts or graphics. The principal will rule on the appropriateness of these materials and concepts.
Teaching from the Heart
A Note from the Red Cross
Good afternoon,
Thank you so much for all your support for the blood drive! We ended collecting 40 productive pints; saving over 120 lives!
We thank you so much for our partnership, and all your hard work. We could have not done this without you all and I'm so lucky to work with such a passionate sponsor.
Have a great weekend, and we will see you next year!
Sincerely,
Kelsey Rosecrans

LA Curriculum Feedback Form
The Language Arts team is seeking teacher, specialist and administrator feedback on this year’s curriculum units.
A link to the feedback form will be added to each grade level’s T&L Schoology group as well as to the Literacy Leader group. An announcement will be made when the links are posted. PLP credit will be provided to participants who provide feedback and share their name and WISE information. Two feedback forms will be offered. The first will be worth one hour of PLP time. This form will gather overall trend data on the unit components and usage. The second option will gather more specific data on each unit. Teachers who elect to do the second form will receive one PLP hour for each feedback form completed. One form can be completed for every unit in a specific grade level. Both options will also be available for sign-up in Frontline.
