Focusing On What Students Can Do: Standards-based Curriculum and Instruction
Series 2: Keeping the Focus on What Students Can Do
This pair of blended-learning courses allows participants to investigate and compare state and national standards and benchmarks for language learning and analyze to what extent their district goals and curriculum focus on what learners can do with language at the novice (levels 1 and 2), intermediate (levels 3 and 4) and/or pre-advanced/advanced (level 5, AP, IB) levels.
Series 1: Keeping the Focus on Standards-based Curriculum and Instruction
Session 1A begins with an overview to the World Readiness Standards and Michigan Standards for Language Learning. Following this introduction, teachers will share ways to consistently integrate the standards into daily lesson plans. In Session 1B, teachers will share lesson plans, noting how the standards are addressed, view a video, and analyze the accompanying lesson plan.
Series 2: Keeping the Focus on What Student Can Do
Session 2A focuses specifically on the Communication Standard and helps teachers to investigate and compare the NCSSFL Can-Do Statements and the Michigan Benchmarks for Interpersonal Communication. Following this analysis, teachers will work together to create a cross-reference document for another communicative modality (interpretive, presentation) or for another proficiency level. The FOUR virtual sessions in Adobe Connect are from 4:00 - 5:30 PM. Additionally, participants are expected to complete 3 hours of work on the Moodle assignments for each session.
Who Should Participate? K-12 World Language Teachers
COST: $15.00 for each series
SCECHs: (pending) $10.00 for each series
***You MUST attend both sessions of each series and complete all assignments to earn SCECHs (6 per series).
***Participants must attend Series 1 in order to register for Series 2.

- Approaches to increasing oral communication
- Scaffolding activities to increase oral communication
