My Life in a Nutshell
By: Samantha Collier
I'm Originally From...
I'm the only one in my family to be born and raised in the U.S. I have lived in Florida my entire life but I have also traveled around the world to visit family for extended vacations, which have included both England and Australia. The reason for this is because my father's nationality is British (my mother's is Native American), and his side of the family always invited me over to experience the difference in cultures. Since half of these family members decided to move to Australia, I also visited accordingly.
The Major Decision
I have many passions in life, but the two that were realistic in the workforce were interior designing and environmental engineering. Interior designing was thrown out of the window due to profitability and university ambiance, so I decided to go with environmental engineering. The choice ended up being a perfect fit because I could go to a school that was the perfect distance from home, had a great marching band, and fit my social needs, all while still earning a major that would be able to make a positive impact on the environment.
What do I do for fun you say?
I LOVE concerts (especially the classics)
Anything that'll get the adrenaline pumping is always good
Traveling anywhere even remotely interesting keeps me happy
Excelling in EXCEL
I discovered the EXCEL program at UCF when I was researching the various tools that I could use to help me transition into a more focused student. When I saw that the program offered tutoring in math and science I immediately signed up (I always seemed to struggle more with those subjects). The mandatory lab hours have been helping with my time management, but the real gem of EXCEL is the amazing support network. There are so many instructors, teaching assistants, mentors, and students involved and willing to help me succeed that all I have to do if I have a question is ask. It makes finding the help that I need less of a hassle while also making me feel like I'm a part of a community at such large university.
*Fun Fact: I love quoting Spongebob, especially when I'm in a quiet room
