Author Visit
Author Mitali Perkins visited DW this week where she spoke about her life, her books, and later signed books that students purchased. The student newspaper staff interviewed Mrs. Perkins. Over 20 artists participated in creating renditions of Mrs. Perkins' book covers.
Mrs. Perkins was born Mitali Bose in Kolkata (Calcutta), India. By the time she was 11, she had lived in Ghana, Cameroon, London, New York and Mexico before settling in California just in time for middle school. Because of the amount of relocating she did as a child she turned to books and the Bengali culture of her traditional home.

Club Raises $$ for Trees
As part of Earth Week, the Go Green Club collected $660 for One Tree Planted! to help plant trees around the world. Students who donated had their names entered into a raffle to win a pizza or ice cream party with friends. The Go Green Club's goal was to raise $422 by Earth Day, 4/22.
Join Leaders in Learning
Seventh-grade students are invited to apply to be a member of Leaders in Learning for the 2022-2023 school year. The purpose of this organization will be to develop leaders who have a desire to serve and improve their community. Leaders in Learning act as peer mentors in SEL Advisory lessons. They also plan programs and events to improve our local and global communities. Each year Leaders in Learning is different from the last year because of what the new members make of it.
In order to apply you need to complete the Leaders In Learning Student Activity Information Form and write the essay mentioned on the second page of the application. Your seventh-grade teachers will complete a faculty evaluation based on your performance in class and your Learning Behavior Characteristics (LBCs).
If you are interested and/or have any questions Leaders in Learning Sponsor Erinn Vincent (evincent@d103.org) is hosting an informational meeting during seventh-grade flex on Tuesday, April 12. If you are in band, chorus or orchestra, she has already spoken to your teachers about missing class for this optional meeting. Completed applications must be turned in to Mrs. Vincent in room 211 no later than 3:35 p.m. Wednesday, May 4. All selected students will be notified of membership status in writing.
