SHISD Mid-Week Message
Promoting Great Things in a Great School District
Miss Texas visits Spring Hill Intermediate!
Intermediate students got a special surprise last Friday when Miss Texas, Monique Evans, stopped by Spring HIll Intermediate School. Thanks to Spring Hill Board President Claudine Giffin, Miss Texas stopped by SHIS to raise awareness for heart disease. She also stopped at Good Shepherd, and several other schools before coming to SHIS. She was accompanied by Dr. Stephanie Payne. Our students were decked out in red to show support for heart health.

Students finish 4th in UIL Film!
From Mr. Justice - Unfortunately our students did not make it to state. They qualified for the top 16 films in the stage and came out in 4th place in their group. State only takes the top 3. They did a great job and I am proud of how far their film ended up going.
So Proud of Mr. Justice and his students!
UIL CX Debate headed to State!
CRASH Program Presented at this Month's Spring Hill PTA Meeting
Some important notes from the meeting:
- There appears to be no difference in distraction and reaction times for hands free and regular cell phone use while driving.
- Car crashes account for 2% of deaths nation wide, but 43% of teen deaths
- Teens who text while driving are up to 33 times more likely to be in a car crash.
Working Over Time to Win!
What a great poem to celebrate this creative program for our students. Thank you Spring Hill Primary for all of your efforts to help our students.
What's Happening with W.O.W. - A poem by the talented Andrea McCutcheon
W.O.W. consists of second graders who are “Working Overtime to Win”.
When did this tutoring program end and when did it begin?
It ran its course from October through February’s first few days.
It has brought opportunities for skill development and growth in many ways.
Beginning with a snack time when kids relax and converse for a spell,
Then on to rotations where they’d learn to regroup, read, and comprehend well.
For extra energy, the group of four dedicated teachers had to dig deep in their reserve.
Their best techniques and instruction was what this special group of students deserved.
They came seeking academic help for a variety of reasons and needs.
Some were English Language Learners, others were below level indeed.
Unified with one purpose to be diligent and to motivate with best effort and pride.
We, the enthusiastic instructors, were there to drive learning, while enjoying the ride.
Guiding through games, building stamina and speed, and driving their thinking;
Our goal was to keep each one floating, most swimming ahead and none sinking.
In math, the focus was on building speed and accuracy with the basic facts to subtract or add.
They worked on number patterns, place value, and the two and three-digit problems they had.
In guided reading, smaller groups were pulled aside and their reading was examined and remedied.
Each learning to decode, build stamina, practice accuracy and fluency and comprehend when you read,
In sounds and sight words, phonics picture cards and vowel combinations were a daily drill.
Mastery of sight words and sound patterns to aid in spelling and decoding were instilled.
Was W.O.W. worth all the time, money and energy spent?
We didn’t fix all the problems, but at least we made a dent.
The best part of the program was the enthusiasm of the participants to come and jump in and start.
Outside students made the W.O.W. students feel special, because they too wanted to take part.
At the end, though we are tired from our time well spent, we reflect.
In W.O.W. we built skills yes, but we also built friendships and respect.
