November Monthly News
BROOKER CREEK ELEMENTARY
Upcoming Events!
We hope you had a chance to view the "Thank you BCE Community" newsletter sent out on 11/8/22. We at BCE certainly have much to be thankful for. Please take a few moments to read through the content below. Many updates are provided. Also, the next round of required state assessments will begin December 5 and conclude December 16. Further details will be shared as the testing window approaches.
For many people, November is time to reflect and give thanks. It may be a time that we express gratitude to others. We would like to provide you with an opportunity to share what you may be grateful for at Brooker Creek Elementary. Please consider taking a moment to express your gratitude to our amazing staff (teachers, office staff, plant or kitchen operations) or even the school in general. Your words have the potential to make a positive impact on our culture as we do try our best to serve your students. Your words will be shared with the appropriate staff member. The link below will allow you to share your thoughts.

BCE’s East Lake Sunrise Rotary Club Student of the Month is Lazar Poljcic. Mrs. Hickman shares that nominating Lazar as her November Student of the Month came easily. He is that wonderful student that always comes to class prepared, always willing to collaborate with his peers and constantly stays engaged in our class discussions. She doesn’t think there’s a subject that doesn’t catch his interest! Lazar consistently shows his commitment to outstanding character traits in the classroom, recess, specials and lunch. He is such a delight with all the adults too! Outside of school, Lazar shines by helping out at home with the family animals and their garden. He feeds the goats and chickens every day! Lazar loves to play soccer, is a member of his church’s folklore dance group, children’s choir and an altar boy. Prior to Covid, Lazar helped his older brother volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House and brought donuts to a police station. In correspondence with his mother, she described Lazar as such a heartwarming child, and Mrs. Hickman couldn’t agree more! Congratulations, Lazar!

Art News
Congratulations to the following BCE artists for having their artwork chosen for the Dunedin Fine Arts Center’s Creative StART exhibit. Opening reception is scheduled for Sunday, November 13th and the show will be open to visitors until December 9th.
· Leo Farmer in Mrs. Bailey’s 3rd grade class, for his beautiful painted torn paper landscape titled “Galactic Landscape”. Leo also won one of the top 3 awards in the county for this piece. So proud of him!!!
· Liam Eisele in Mrs. McSunas’ 2nd grade class, for his painting of “Floating Jellyfish”.
More terrific news swirling around the art room……BCE has been awarded a special projects grant through The Pinellas County School Referendum Funds to continue our “Murals and Mosaic’s” project in the student courtyard. This year, all students in grades K-5 will assist in creating handmade ceramic tiles and will work with our visiting artist, Heather Richardson, owner of Safety Harbor Art and Music Center. Our vision is to create a visual mosaic “waterfall” on the steps of the amphitheater. One step closer to a beautiful “Brooker Creek Elementary Nature Preserve” in the courtyard.
As amazing as this grant is, we are still in need of raising an additional $2,500.00 to pay for artist fees and supplies. If you, your family or place of business would like to make a donation of any amount, please fill out a Partner in Education Form and make checks payable to Brooker Creek Elementary. On the Memo line, please write: Murals and Mosaics Art Project. To ensure the funds go towards this amazing schoolwide permanent art installation, be sure to check off the donation is to be used towards the Art Department. These may be submitted to the front office.
Thanks, as always, for supporting The Arts at BCE!

Book Fair News:
WOW! The BCE Fall Book Fair had an awesome turn out and there simply are not enough words to express our gratitude. THANK YOU to all the fearless volunteers who gave their time, THANK YOU to all the fabulous visitors who shopped the fair, and THANK YOU to everyone who purchased books. All profits earned from the Book Fair will be used to support our Media Center.
It's the boundless generosity of this community that helps make Brooker Creek Elementary one of the best Elementary Schools in the district!
Library News:
The media center is a place where kids learn to enjoy reading. When a student chooses the books that interest them, they are more interested in reading. Remind your child to choose a just right book. Please take time to share their books with them. By sitting together looking at the pictures, reading the captions and talking about the story, you are building memories and modeling good reading habits that will last your child a lifetime. If you would like to view our inventory of books, please go to https://destiny.pcsb.org and select Brooker Creek Elementary. This will give you a direct link to all the books that we have in our collection available for checkout.
Our students have been doing a much better job of returning books on time. We greatly appreciate their efforts, as well as your encouragement for them to do so. We would like students to remember their student name badges or book bags when they visit the Media Center, as this greatly enhances the check-out system.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Super Successful “Socktober”!
The SAVE club students, Mrs. Miller, and Mrs. Fox would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our Brooker Creek staff, students, and families for making our first ever “Socktober” collection such a HUGE success! We were able to collect 1,233 pairs of socks!!
Because of the large amount, we will not only be able to donate to Metropolitan Ministries as originally intended, but also to other homeless support organizations in our area.
A special thank you also to the P.E. Dept., Mr. Ross, and Mrs. Livingston for allowing students to participate in the Friday “Sock Hop” as the culminating activity for our month long collection.P.E. News
Hey Bobcats! It's that time of year again....The Turkey Trot!!! This year's Turkey Trot will take place on Thursday, November 17th. Students will run during their "Specials" time. We had a great turn-out last year and are hoping for the same. We love seeing the families come out to support their children and their children's friends! Right now, we're starting a soccer skills unit. We're beginning with basic skills and working our way up to team games. We hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving Break!
