First Grade News

Mrs. Baker, Room 22

Highlights from Week 21: February 1-5

Hello Families!

I hope you're having a nice weekend! The sunshine and Super Bowl today will make for a great Sunday. It was another fun week in the classroom, with so much exploration and learning.

We said goodbye to a very special student, Tyson. The students wrote him letters that will encourage him as be begins first grade in a new classroom. We will all miss his sense of humor and creative thinking!

In Friday folders this week, students brought home a class list for Valentines. If you child wants to participate, please bring them on Friday and make sure there is a valentine for each child in class. We look forward to celebrating friendship this week, as we prepare for our Valentine's Day/Friendship party on Friday.

Lucas generously gave his Top Dog spot to Tyson, so he could enjoy these special duties before he left. Lucas still has a few more days in the Top Dog spot.

Check out our classroom updates, and as always, be sure to contact me with any questions. Hope you're enjoying some family time this weekend.

Valentine's Day/Friendship Party

Hi parents!

Valentine's Day is quickly approaching and we want to make a fun party for our class! We will be having a class party on Friday, February 12th from 1:45-2:40. We plan to have a craft, pass out Valentines, play some quick games, and finally let kids open Valentines and have a cookie and juice. We would love some extra help for this to make sure we can pull it off! If you're able to help us at the party, could you please let us know, that will help us know how many activities we can plan for!
You can email me at juliestrande@gmail.com, Kim at silverfoot21@yahoo.com, or Alicia at lafabulosa@gmail.com

Welcome Lilly!

We are so lucky to welcome our new student, Lilly, to Room 22. Many students traded their recess to make a sign for her on her first day. She entered the room with a big smile, and I haven't seen it fade yet. The students are showing great friendship and support for Lilly as she learns our classroom and school procedures.

ART LITERACAY

ART LITERACY: Friday, February 12 9:10-10:00

ARTIST: Frankenhaber

The kids will be painting, but not necessarily with brushes. They will use thinned out paint with spoons and/or droppers. In addition, we should leave a little time at the end for the kids to think about naming their piece. Frankenthaler named her pieces AFTER she or someone else indicated what they saw in her work.

Thank you for your help! I am sure the kids will love this!

OMSI Wild Weather Presentation

Last week, we learned about air and weather during our amazing OMSI assembly. Sophie was lucky enough to be chosen to help in a science experiment! We learned that 221 pounds of molecules press on every square inch of our body every moment of the day. We learned about air pressure, heat, and oxygen! It was a great springboard for our projects in class.

Volunteering in the Classroom

For February and March, I am adjusting our volunteer time slots slightly. I am hoping to have some help during our Literacy Block, which covers writing (9:15-10:00) and reading as well (10:00-11:00). Please sign up to join us just once, or every week. We love having our volunteers in the classroom!

A big thank you to Julie, Shannon, Jenny and Dana, who have all been in on a weekly basis!
