Chewonki Visits with The Owls of Maine
Have you ever seen a live owl? The kindergarten class has! Kindergarteners have been busy learning about owls. Students have discussed characteristics of owls, especially what makes them unique. Students have completed art projects to go along with the books they have read, including Oola the Owl who Lost her Hoot and Owl Babies. This week Chewonki visited DNS and presented the Owls of Maine traveling nature program. Kindergartners were able to touch artifacts and see live owls. A big thank you, to the Bath Elementary School PTA for sponsoring this educational opportunity for our students.
The Owl
There’s a wide - eyed owl
With a pointed nose.
He has pointed tufts
And talons for toes.
He sits in a tree
And looks at you.
Then he flaps his wings
And says, “Who, who, who!”

Notes from the Nurse
February is Children’s Dental Health Month
Healthy dental habits begin at home. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends helping your child brush their teeth each night before bedtime. Read more about Brush, Book, Bed on the Healthy Kids website.
Lines from the Library
Dike-Newell students have been learning about social awareness during this week's library classes. Social awareness pertains to understanding the perspectives of others and empathizing with them, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Kindergarten students read "Don't Touch My Hair!" by Sharee Miller, "Every Little Letter" by Deborah Underwood and "Kids Around the World" by Dona Herweck Rice. First and second grade students read "Nana Akua Goes to School" by Tricia Elam Walker and "Ghana" by Thomas Persano. Students discovered where to find resources in the Dike-Newell library as well as online to learn about other countries and cultures and concluded by previewing the Duolingo website for language learning.
Kids Kindness Challenge
Wild Maine, an entirely volunteer-driven organization, presents the "Kids Kindness Challenge"! Wild Maine invites kids to engage in service, perform acts of kindness, and inspire moments of gratitude throughout the month of February. They are hoping to engage kids in activities every day throughout the month that connect them with themselves, their community, and their local environment. Challenges range from writing letters of gratitude to teachers to performing acts of kindness for their families. They are simple, age-appropriate and aim to inspire acts of intention over the course of the month. It's free to register and Dike-Newell Students have been invited to participate! The Bath YMCA donated 100 visitor passes that will be given to the first 100 kids who register.
