HPS EXPANDS DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM BY 40%, PROVIDING PROGRAM ACCESS TO APPROXIMATELY 120 MORE STUDENTS
We are excited to announce the expansion of the innovative dual language program that is offered at the Joseph Metcalf School and the E.N. White School. Home to the first dual language program in Western Massachusetts, we are expanding the program as we strive to realize our vision of a pathway for every student. Dual language programming provides students with the opportunity to learn all grade level subjects in both English and Spanish by using curriculum aligned with the state’s curriculum frameworks. Upon high school graduation, dual language students may earn the Seal of Biliteracy, an award designated for students who have attained proficiency in English and at least one additional language.
In the 2019-2020 school year, this two-way immersion program, which currently serves approximately 300 students will expand by 40% to serve approximately 420 students. Metcalf and E.N. White schools will continue to expand by a grade level and will each add a second preschool dual language class. The goal of the program is for students to reach high levels of academic achievement, bilingualism, and biliteracy in a safe and engaging learning environment that values multiculturalism, while preparing students for college and career. We are thrilled to welcome more students and families into this high-quality, highly in-demand program.
The first dual language program in the district opened with two Kindergarten classes at Metcalf School in the 2014-2015 school year. In school year 2016-2017, the program expanded to E.N. White School with the opening of one Pre-K classroom. An additional grade is added every school year at each location. Next year, the program will be offered to students in Pre-K through grade five at Metcalf School and students in Pre-K through grade two at E.N. White School.
The plan is to continue to grow our dual language program to support our students’ in their attainment of two languages, which can eventually lead to students earning the Seal of Biliteracy upon graduation.
FIRST GRADUATING CLASS IN HOLYOKE TO BE AWARDED THE STATE SEAL OF BILITERACY
We are excited to celebrate the first graduating class in Holyoke to receive the Seal of Biliteracy, an award designated for students who have attained proficiency in English and at least one additional language. Students in the Class of 2019 will receive the award on May 21, 2019 at 4:00 PM in the Shevlin Studio at Holyoke High School’s North Campus (500 Beech Street, Holyoke, MA).
The Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy is an award that was established in November 2017 as a way to recognize graduates who have earned proficiently in English as well as another language. Students qualify for the State Seal of Biliteracy when a high school senior has attained proficiency in English, met qualifications for graduation, and has passed the state approved language assessment. Through the Seal of Biliteracy, the recognition of attaining biliteracy becomes part of the high school transcript and diploma for these students. The Seal serves to certify attainment of biliteracy for students, employers, and universities. This expands opportunities as students leave school and are ready to enter college and the workforce.
We are honored to be one of the first school districts in Western Massachusetts to award the Seal of Biliteracy to our students. Members of this graduating class are the pioneers of this pathway in our district. This certificate provides our students with an advantage and competitive edge to be more marketable, sought-after members in the global workplace.
The following ten students will receive the award: Marianegely Aldarondo, Ruth Arzuaga-Rodriguez, Katelynn Cruz, Khyarah Gaston Feliciano, Mia Hernandez, Karina Lopez-Perez, Nashali Pagan, Thayra Quinones, Dylan Rios, and Cristal Sepulveda.
In addition to being honored at this ceremony, recipients will be given a distinguished pin and sash that will be worn over their graduation gown and the Seal of Biliteracy insignia will be affixed to student diplomas as proof of biliterate attainment.
According to Kathleen Anderson, Director of Community Benefits at Holyoke Medical Center, “A bilingual workforce is a requirement at Holyoke Medical Center because of our very diverse patient population. We explain everything we do, as clearly as possible, in the language our patients prefer. As a partner in the Medical Life Science Academy at Holyoke High School, offering internships and work placement opportunities to students, we would like to commend both the students for their effort and dedication, as well as the Holyoke Public School Department for their foresight in providing lifelong skills demanded within the workforce.”
With the expansion of our dual language programming we are excited to see what the future holds for students who are being educated in a bilingual setting.

HHS HOSTED 2019 BUILD ENTREPRENEURSHIP PITCH - HOLYOKE HIGH STUDENTS SHOWCASED BUSINESS PLANS FROM THE NATIONWIDE BUILD PROGRAM
Holyoke High School hosted the 2019 BUILD Entrepreneurship Pitch last Friday, showcasing student business plans that have been developed in their Entrepreneurship courses over the past several months. The event was modeled after several other pitch events in colleges across the country and was held in a format similar to the hit television show Shark Tank.
Holyoke High School teamed up with BUILD last summer and designed a curriculum that allows students to become entrepreneurs and develop their own businesses. BUILD is a national not-for-profit that works with schools across the country to develop Entrepreneurship courses for high school students.
The event featured Entrepreneurship students, Holyoke High School’s Executive Principal Dr. Stephen Mahoney as a judge or “shark,” as well as the class’ teacher Zachary Baru, among other area business leaders such as Attorney Carla W. Newton (Partner, Robinson Donovan P.C.), Matt Flink (Regional Facilities Director for the O’Connell Companies), Darby O’Brien (Graduate of HHS and owner of Darby O’Brien Advertising), Tessa Murphy-Romboletti (Executive Director of SPARK, Entrepreneurship for All in Holyoke), Lydia Phillips (Director, BUILD), Insiya Bergeron Holyoke Innovation District Manager), James Wall (Graduate of HHS and former Global Managing Director of Talent and Chief Diversity Officer at Deloitte Touche), Jeff Hayden (VP for Business and Community Services at HCC and former Economic and Development for City of Holyoke).
Congratulations to the winner of the event, Mia Rodriguez, for her Twist & Brush, all-in-one toothpaste and toothbrush product. We are grateful to all of our judges and thankful for all who supported this event.
HHS STUDENT JGRIANNA SANTIAGO ANNOUNCED AS THE OUTSTANDING VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL STUDENT OF THE YEAR
We are proud to announce that JGrianna Santiago, an outstanding student in the cosmetologist technical program at the HHS Dean Campus, has been awarded as one of this year’s Outstanding Vocational Technical Student of the Year. Her professionalism and dedication to the field of cosmetology have been observed while working with local employers in the field and at various competitions. JGrianna has participated in a challenging course of study. She is ranked first in her class at the HHS Dean Campus and will be pursuing a career in the cosmetology industry.
MEET THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF GREATER HOLYOKE'S 2019 YOUTH OF THE YEAR - KARINA LOPEZ!
Congratulations to Karina Lopez, a senior at HHS, for being awarded the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holyoke’s 2019 Youth of the Year Award! Karina’s favorite quote is, "No matter what life throws at you, you must find the power to give it back lovingly and appreciatively for that is what has made you what you are today." This must have inspired her vision for America’s Youth, "The world has gotten to be a difficult place, and this translates directly into its people. For this reason, we must build up the world’s youth to be the best people they can be and to reach their full potential. My vision for the youth of the world is no extravagant ask, all that I would like to see in our youth is the need to improve. This urgency to make themselves more capable people will inevitably make the world a better place for them and for everyone else. This newfound motivation that will be added to the youth will make it possible for new innovations and life-changing technology in the future. The youth of the world need to realize that they are important and that nothing is out of reach as long as they apply themselves. Overall I would just like to encourage young people to stand up for themselves and what they believe in so that they can change the world someday." Read more about Karina and her experience at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holyoke.

SAVE THE DATE - Friday, May 24th - Shine On Day! In Memory of Genesis Silva
In memory of Genesis Silva, Friday, May 24th is Shine On Day at HPS! Genesis attended Peck school and would have been celebrating her 14th birthday on May 27th. It is easy to perform a random act of kindness. If you need ideas, Genesis enjoyed music, being read to, the sound of percussion instruments and playing with them, and singing. Read to someone! Volunteer in a special needs classroom - her SHINE CLASS would love to be read to. They also love dancing and singing. Volunteer at a school. Donate blood! Her parents have set up a bloodmobile blood drive for the 18th of May. Please spread random acts of kindness around HPS.

Léale a alguien.
