Our Graduation Rate Climbed to 94.5% in 2017-18!
The State of Oregon released graduation date on Jan. 24, showing a statewide improvement of more than 2 percent from 2016-17. Similarly, the West Linn-Wilsonville School District saw its graduation rate grow to 94.5 percent — the highest among large-sized school districts in Oregon.
West Linn-Wilsonville’s overall graduation rate of 94.5 percent is up from 93 percent in 2016-17 and 2015-16. WLWV’s overall graduation rate has grown every year for the past five years. The district’s dropout rate of less than 1 percent rates considerably lower than the state average of 3.55 percent, meanwhile.
West Linn-Wilsonville School District also saw improvements in graduation rates for Students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) as well as students who are or who have ever been English Language Learners. Graduation rates for students with IEPs grew for the fifth-straight year, up to 81.5 percent, which is more than 20 percent higher than the state average. Students who are or have ever been English Language Learners grew for the third-straight year, coming in at 100 percent in 2017-18. The district also saw growth in economically disadvantaged students, with graduation rates climbing 4 percent to 87 percent in 2017-18.
West Linn High School recorded the highest graduation rate in the state among large high schools at 98.2 percent. Wilsonville High School was close behind at 94.6 percent, followed by Arts and Technology High School (56 percent), which saw growth in a number of areas.
While 2017-18 graduation data shows many improvements district-wide and in many student groups, West Linn-Wilsonville remains committed to eliminating opportunity and achievement gaps for all students. The district will continue to prepare all students for graduation, career, and post-K12 education. To view complete graduation data please visit the Oregon Department of Education website.
Professional Growth Wednesday Scheduled for February 6
One example of that professional learning took place at Athey Creek Middle School on January 16, where front office staff from across West Linn-Wilsonville gathered for a series of updates and collaboration. Administrative and Office Assistants from every WLWV school reviewed district systems, received recent changes to practice and policy, and shared insight and advice with one another.
Safety Spotlight — Threat Assessment
The community of the West Linn-Wilsonville School District embraces the concept of circles of support to ensure that every child knows they are a competent contributor to the school community and that they belong. Our district has many structures for providing students with the support that they need to excel, to solve problems, and to participate fully in the community. These structures are evident in every building in our district, and promote feelings of inclusion, belonging, and growth mindset.
In very rare occasions, a student may demonstrate, through communication or behavior, an action that may be deemed as potentially harmful to the physical well-being of other students or staff. In these very rare occasions, an additional circle of support is formed, known as the Threat Assessment Team. The Threat Assessment Team is convened by the Principal when there is a significant concern in regard to student or staff safety that is not able to be mitigated at the building level. In these cases, the Threat Assessment Team comes alongside the principal to help understand the student and the context, to ensure that all students remain safe during the process, and to design plans to help move beyond the crisis event in ways that support a sense of community in the building.
In December, the West Linn-Wilsonville School District joined local law enforcement, Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue, safety experts from Clackamas County and other local agencies for the district’s quarterly joint safety meeting. The local agencies joined district administrators and key personnel to engage in tabletop exercises around Threat Assessment: the process the district uses when an incident or student behavior causes significant concern in regard to student or staff safety that can’t be mitigated at the building level.
