Update: In-Person Family Faith Opportunity on Sunday, September 19

An important aspect of our Family Faith Program includes opportunities for sharing and meeting together. Our September Zoom Meetings are scheduled for the week of September 19. On that day, we will offer an In-Person Family Faith Session for families who prefer to join an outdoor, in- person session. Below are the details:

Date: Sunday, September 19

Time: 1:00PM-2:30PM

Location: Sacred Heart Church (outdoors)

Family Choice: In-Person Session on September 19 or Virtual Zoom Meetings

We understand choosing to attend an in-person session is a family choice. For that reason, this session is VOLUNTARY. For the month of September, your family can choose to join this September 19 In-Person Session OR the virtual Monthly Zoom Meeting that your family regularly attends online. The family activities that will be offered at the In-Person Session will be the same theme as activities taught during the virtual Monthly Zoom Meeting.

Structure of this In-Person Family Faith Event

This In-Person Session will be set up similar to a fair atmosphere (not a formal class). On the lawn outside the office of Holy Family Parish, different tables with activities will be set up for families to learn and enjoy. Come together with your children anytime between 1:00PM-2:30PM.

What if it Rains or the Weather Does Not Permit for this Outdoor In-Person Session?

This In-Person Session will be cancelled. An email will be sent to families on the morning of September 19 to inform that it is cancelled. It will also be posted on our website, Facebook & Twitter. If the In-Person Session is cancelled, please join your regularly scheduled Zoom Meeting.

This is a FAMILY Faith Event

This In-Person Session is a FAMILY event. Please come with your family. Parents, do not drop off or allow children to attend this event alone.

Mass Readings for Sunday, September 5: Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

In Mark's Gospel, Jesus heals a man who was deaf and has a speech impediment. Through Jesus' actions, we understand that Christ is in control of our lives and can do anything. As His followers, we should be ready to listen to Him and follow in His words.

In this weekend's Gospel, friends helped the man who was deaf by bringing him to Jesus. They trusted that Jesus knew how to make Him well and share His faith. Jesus took the man aside and cared for him as an individual, and didn’t just do miracles for show. People were amazed at what the Messiah had done, even though He didn’t want them to spread the news too much.

In our everyday world, as humans, we sometimes may “hear”, but not listen. In daily prayer and reflection, consider better ways to listen to Jesus, as His follower.

Jesus Heals Puppet

This craft demonstrates Mark's Gospel story of how God heals: By opening our EARS and loosening our TONGUES. Create this puppet, using fasteners to have ears rotate out and fold a paper into the flap of the bag to appear like the tongue.

Materials

  • Paper bag
  • 2 Fasteners
  • Glue or Tape
  • Construction Paper
  • Markers and Decorating Material

Procedure

  1. Using markers and decorating materials, create a puppet using the paper bag.
  2. Create the EARS using construction paper. Use the 2 fasteners to secure the ears in the back of the puppet so they can rotate out.
  3. Create the TONGUE using a strip of construction paper. Fold the strip in opposite directions so that it pops out. Use glue/tape to secure the tongue onto the puppet.
  4. On the front of the puppet, write this passage from the Gospel: “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.” Mark 7:31-37 Then decorate your puppet!

A Farmer's Heart Felt Tribute

Ben Jackson, an Australian farmer, could not travel to attend his aunt's funeral due to the coronavirus lockdown. However, with the help of his flock of sheep, he created this tribute of a large heart to honor her memory.
