Dear Jackson Families,

What a wonderful way to start the 2022-2023 school year. Our jaguars are ready for a great year of learning and growing. Thank you for supporting your child to do their best each day. We know with your support and encouragement your child is on their way to be bilingual, bi-literate, and prepared for success in a global society.

We encourage you to visit our website jackson.ops.org to stay up to date on important dates, find school related links, access electronic copies of school forms and handbooks, view our school improvement plan, Title One plan, and find grade level information including schedules, donation requests, and volunteer possibilities.

During August and September, your students will be part of district level assessments in English reading and math. We will use these assessment results to plan instruction and identify students for additional supports. K-6 students will participate in MAP Growth assessments in reading and math. Grades 3-6 will also participate in science in October. K-3 students will also participate in an Amira reading benchmark assessment in English and Spanish.

Our Early Childhood, Kindergarten, and Grades 1-4 students will participate in health screenings in September and October. If your family wants to opt out of it of the school screener and instead have your health care provider complete this, please email our School Nurse, Megan.Stanek@ops.org.

Please welcome Erin Solheim to Jackson. She will serve as our Librarian until the vacant position is filled.

Parts of our recess area are under construction. The summer work referenced in May was delayed. We are hoping all the work will be complete by the end of October. A new Mini-Pitch soccer field will be installed. The basketball area will also be updated. Thank you Football for the World Foundation for organizing this update for the Jackson community.

Thank you for following the traffic flow during arrival and dismissal. Please remember, do not use the top section of the bus lane when cones are reserving for the bus. Do not park in the bus lane. If you need to park, please use the parking lot to the west or park in the neighborhood. Only cross with students at the crosswalks. The alley is reserved for daycare. Please do not park in the alley

School attendance is very important. Students should attend school regularly, on time, and all day. If your child is sick, please call the office, 531-299-1620, to report the absence. Do not send your child to school if they are sick.

8:35 am Breakfast doors open - Grab-n-Go breakfast in the classroom

8:45 am Arrival for students not eating breakfast

8:50 am K-6 School Begins

8:50 am Early Childhood / Pre-K Arrival

3:55 pm Early Childhood / Pre-K Dismissal

4:00 pm Kindergarten Dismissal; Buses load

4:05 pm 1-6 Dismissal

The First Steps to Success!

“Attendance makes a difference! The single most important factor contributing to student achievement is school attendance. Students must be in school to be successful.” (Journal of Educational Research, Vol.89 No. 3)

Did you know that students who attend school regularly:

  • have higher test scores
  • are more involved in school activities
  • are more likely to graduate
  • are less inclined to participate in at-risk behaviors

What you, the parent, can do:

  • start the night before by assisting with/review homework assignments and plan for the next day
  • establish an age appropriate bedtime routine
  • role model a positive attitude about work, being on time, and being prepared
  • should attendance problems occur, contact the school counselor to develop a plan to resolve the issue

Wellness Tip of the Month

Set a Bedtime Routine. According to the National Sleep Foundation, children the ages of 3-5 require 10 – 13 hours of sleep daily. Children the ages of 6-13 require 9-11 hours of sleep daily. If your children are waking up at 8:00 am then they should be falling asleep between 8 pm and 9 pm for maximum rest and between 9pm and 10pm for the minimum amount of rest. Well rested children learn better and are more successful at regulating their emotions.

Interested in Volunteering?

The online volunteer application is available for all adults who wish to volunteer on a school campus, chaperone on a field trip, or district sponsored activity with students. The required Volunteer Application allows the District and the schools to provide the appropriate level of clearance for school volunteers, protecting our students.

Steps to Become a Volunteer in Omaha Public Schools

1. Contact the school or teacher to discuss a volunteer opportunity.

2. Complete volunteer application online - https://omaha.tedk12.com/hire/ViewJob.aspx?JobID=11509

3. Building principal will either approve or deny the volunteer activity request.

4. Human Resources will communicate via email to the principal and volunteer applicant of approval or denial of request.

5. Volunteer activity can begin AFTER approval email is received from Human Resources. This email is sent to both the volunteer and the principal.

6. All volunteers must follow Omaha Public Schools guidelines regarding safe and responsible return to school. (Board resolution 21-015)

There are 3 levels of volunteering:

  • Level 1. Is intended for activities that are at the school. This is the most basic level and does not involve student contact. Examples include clerical work, filing in the office area.
  • Level 2. Is intended for activities where the Volunteer is ALWAYS in a group setting with certificated OPS staff member present. This level of clearance will allow you to act as a volunteer in classrooms, support campus activities such as Room Parent, Library Aide.
  • Level 3. Requires a criminal background check and approval through Human Resources. This level is intended for individuals who may be working one on one with a student, with or without direct supervision of a certificated staff OPS staff member, which may be taking place either on or off district property. This level of clearance will allow you to act as a volunteer in activities, involved in supervising students, such as tutors, field trip or dance chaperones, coaches, and mentors.

All volunteers must reapply each school year to be considered for volunteer opportunities. The volunteer application can be found by clicking the Careers tab on the OPS website, viewing current job openings and entering “volunteer” in the search bar for job listings.

1. Monday Clean-Up Crew - Pick up trash on the Jackson campus each Monday morning from 8:15 - 8:35 am. Sign-Up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0548ABA72DA6FA7-monday

2. Lunch Time Game Leader - Facilitate game time for students during lunch time. Students can play Connect Four, Checkers, Chess, or Dominos while enjoying their lunch. Sign-Up coming soon.

3. TeamMates Mentor - Contact Ms. Sisavanh, our School Counselor, for more information about being a mentor through the TeamMates program.
