A Message from Mrs. DeCamp :)
As students begin to participate in loads of Halloween fun, some reminders to help them remain healthy and successful in school and at home:
- Make a plan to trick or treat safely this Halloween. There are many safe activities and parties being held around the community. Talk to your child about how to be safe when trick or treating in your neighborhood.
- Please do not send candy to school. We prefer students to have healthy snacks while in school to help promote active learning and healthy energy.
- When at home, limit the amount of candy you allow your child to have. For example, each night, for dessert, let them choose three pieces to enjoy that night.
- Many dental offices do candy trade-in events where kids can trade in their candy for something else such as a gift card or movie tickets!
Don't forget to join us on October 25th for our PTO's Annual Boo Bash! It goes from 6-8 pm with lots of fun activities! We hope to see you there!
ROARS is in full-swing at CSCS!
One addition to our ROARS matrix has been a "Technology" component. With so much of our modern world being driven by technology, we can get caught up on our devices or forget how to use them in a safe and responsible way. Knowing this, our ROARS committee created a specific technology part of our matrix to help us explicitly teach how approach and use technology.
Please note that you have access to all of our ROARS posters and matrices on our school website at: www.cscsd.org
Emergency Safety Procedures
We would also like to give a huge thank you to our local law enforcement who take the time to participate in our drills and offer advice and support to make sure that we are doing everything we can to have safe and secure procedures in the event of a real emergency!
Savona Fire Department Open House and Halloween Party!
Attendance is incredibly important!
Many times, as we call home to check on students who are absent, we have parents ask for guidance about when their sick child can return to school. Also, many times, kids stay home when they could have been in school. Below is a graphic to help you determine when your child is too sick for school! As always, don't hesitate to contact the school with any questions!
Becoming Problem Solvers!
Every parent has done it at least once or even twice. We swoop in and handle our child’s conflict. In this instant we are telling our children two things: we will be there for you and you cannot handle it on your own. Even though we do not mean to do the second part of my last statement, we are doing that if we do not show them how to handle conflict on their own. Let’s talk about how to make our children problem solvers. We need to help them realize when they are experiencing strong uncomfortable feelings due to a conflict. You can help them to notice what their bodies show you and them when they are mad, sad, frustrated, etc. They can use this to be able to tell the other person in the conflict how they feel about what they are doing to them and what they would like them to do instead. Another option, they can choose to ignore the other person if they do not feel that they can talk to them at that moment in a calm manner. They could choose to remove themselves from the situation and just walk away. If they try one or all these strategies and are still in conflict, then they can come to you for help because they have tried to solve their problem first.

We kicked off October with an awesome few weeks. It is getting colder so please make sure your children have something warm to put on for the mornings and recess in the afternoons. If you need assistance with this, please contact me and I will be happy to help.
The BackPack Program is in full swing now, if you are enrolled you should be receiving your bags. Just to clear up any confusion, it is one bag per household this year. I will let you know if that changes. A big THANK YOU to the BackPack Bunch for all their help!
Operation Greater Joy is now beginning, if you are enrolled you should have received your paperwork. If you have not sent it back to me, please do as it is time sensitive. Also, please remember if you are receiving assistance with Christmas gifts from another program do not turn in paperwork for OGJ. This limits the amount of people we can assist over the holiday season and we want everyone to have a great experience.
The After School Program has some reminders. The times to pick up your children are 4:00 or 5:00 p.m. we ask that you do not alter these times unless it is necessary. Also, if you pick up your children at 5:00 please try to be on time, as our staff stays with the students to make sure they are safe. We are starting our Science enrichment station so your child/children may bring home the experiments they create. If you do not want the experiments to come home or have any questions about the BPP, OGJ, or the Lost and Found that will be donated on October 31st please contact me at 607-527-9800 Ext. 3105. Remember if you work hard and be kind, amazing things will happen, pass it on!

Note from the health office:
Parents as we move into cold and flu season I can't stress enough that you get yourselves and your children vaccinated. Contrary to some peoples beliefs, you do not get the flu from the flu shot. The CDC says that if you do get the flu even after getting immunized your symptoms will be less severe and that you will be sick for a shorter duration.
We are already seeing some Respiratory viruses in the health office. Children are complaining of severe head aches, sore throats, cough, and are running fairly high temperatures. Please if your child is sick make arrangements to keep them home. That, and good hand washing, covering mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing are the best way to prevent the spread of infections.
I encourage you to make sure your children are eating healthy, you may want to use a multivitamin supplement if you don't think they are getting proper nutrition, and make sure they are getting plenty of fluids and rest. And again handwashing is the single most important way to prevent the spread of germs
And on a final note, head lice is a common occurrence in childhood. We have seen a few cases this year. Please I encourage you to check your child's hair frequently for signs of lice, or nits (eggs) and treat if needed. If your have questions or concerns regarding treatment please contact us here at the health office.
