Our topic is BYOD ( bring your own device) and how its impacts education on all levels. This involves being able to use your technology to help you in your studies. You can bring in devices such as phones, tablets, and laptops to help you with school work throughout the day

  • A new report done by Market Watch suggests that the BYOD market revenue is expected to surpass $225 Billion by 2020.
  • A recent rise in the BYOD market in Asia Pacific has been fueled by willingness exhibited by individuals in countries such as India and China to use their personal devices for working on their personal devices at home.
  • to help curb some of the internet distractions of BYOD in schools, some are trying new IT security systems that place new firewalls that effectively block unwanted applications—like social media—from being accessed while students are at school
  • BYOD market has had rapid growth due to the explosion in the 4G networks made by small cell deployments. Creating IT a huge security threat that needs to be addressed by the global markets.

Some Pros of BYOD

  • Students are already familiar and comfortable using their own technology so they can focus on actually learning with them than learning how to use the device.
  • Students are more likely to have remembered their beloved mobile devices than textbooks or notes
  • It’s a cost-effective way to save schools money on technology.
  • BYOD provides opportunity for teaching respectful/appropriate use, which will be important in properly preparing them for the future.
  • Students will be more organized with all their notes and assignments all in one place
  • Teachers can use certain apps to be more connected with students and parents than ever before.
  • Gives the students limitless access to information and resources.
  • Students will be more likely to collaborate with one another.

Some Cons of BYOD

  • All these mobile devices can overload your wireless network.
  • It possibly opens up the opportunity for cheating.
  • Technology may become a status symbol for students causing the divide between the haves and have not’s to be even greater.
  • Students may be more easily distracted while working on their own mobile devices.
  • Students bringing in their own devices to school may increase the possibility of theft.
  • Students may not be able to afford these devices
  • Students forget to bring their mobile devices.
  • Some teacher may resist teaching with technology.

Topic Impact

  • students can focus more on getting their work done, versus having to learn how to use the specific device that the school assigns
  • students are more likely to continue their learning outside of the school walls
  • students will be more organized with their assignments all in one place- makes studying and working on projects easier
  • Learning about these devices will better prepare them for the future and what may take over older devices no longer used
  • closes gap between learning at school and home
  • cyber-bullying can occur online through messages and social media
  • students can learn at a pace and style more comfortable for themselves
