Newsletter Week 10 Term 3

Sacred Heart School Petone Wednesday 28 September 2022

Principal's Pen

Dear Parents and friends

We have come to the end of Term 3! It has been very busy and the students have enjoyed many new experiences. Our newly elected school Board meets tonight and we thank all those who put themselves forward for election. Term 4 is only 9 weeks so we will all be needing to hit the ground running right from the beginning of the term.

The refurbishment of Tui class is complete and we are awaiting sign off from the Council. Tui will be back in their room from the beginning of Term 4. Archbishop Paul Martin is coming to school on Wednesday 19th October to bless the room. Thanks to everyone for putting up with the disruption while the building work was going on.

Well done to our students who competed in the Interzone Swimming last Friday. Thanks to Miss Martell for organising our team. The students all did their best and they achieved some great results.

We offer our prayers and sympathy to the Taplin and Walters families on their recent family bereavements. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

Classes 2023: We have started thinking about our classes for next year and how they will be made up. All our Senior classes will be quite large next year due to the fact that we only have 15 Year 8's leaving. This will have a flow on effect right down the school. If your child will not be returning to Sacred Heart next year we would appreciate knowing this as soon as possible.

Hutt Fest:

We are participating in the Hutt Fest this year. All students in Years 4- 8 are involved and are expected to attend. We are performing on Thursday 29th September. The evening starts at 6pm. Everyone is expected to stay until the end of the concert as a sign of respect to all the performers. Tickets are now sold out and if you did not get any tickets you may be able to secure some door sales on the night. The students have been practicing very hard and special thanks is due to the teachers in the senior school

Touch Term 4:

Thanks to everyone who registered for Term 4. I am working on teams and hope to get them out before Friday.

Our Special Character

Grandparents Mass:

Thank you so much to all the Grandparents, honorary Grandparents, Great Aunts and Uncles and parishioners who joined us for our Grandparents Mass and Morning Tea last week. It was such a joy to celebrate with you all after 2 years of not being able to celebrate this Mass.

It was a joy filled and reverent Mass which we all enjoyed very much. We would like to share Theo and Pearl's Nana's words with you:

"A very big thank you for the wonderful Grandparents Mass held yesterday.

The service was beautiful - great singing, the message and the opportunity to gather together to celebrate and give thanks. The morning tea was an amazing spread - thank you to the hands that prepared it. Just wanted to let you know how much it was appreciated."

Kindest regards

Cathie (Pearl & Theo's Nana)

Te whakanui i to tatou kura (Celebrating our school)

This week we welcomed Zadie and her family to our Sacred Heart whanau. Nau mai haere mai Zadie! It is lovely to have you here with us. We will welcome Zadie properly with a Whakatau next term.

Virginia and Floyd from Hutt City Council visited our junior classes last Friday for Dog Safety sessions. Learning how to interact safely with a dog is hugely important for our tamariki. We learnt:

  • If a dog is on its own, leave it alone!
  • Never tease a dog.
  • Always ask before patting a dog.
  • Chin and chest is best (for patting a dog).

Silver Reward

Congratulations to the whole school for earning the Silver and Gold rewards in quick succession. We celebrated the Silver reward with a confidence course! There was racing and laughter and best times to beat, and we were blessed with a rare sunny day. Check out the pictures below.

School News

Car parking and dropping students off/picking up from school

Sadly we are at the point where we need to remind parents and caregivers once again to park correctly, considerately and safely at school drop off and pick up times. We have had several neighbours and members of the public reporting unsafe and inconsiderate parking within the last week.

Please do not use the church driveway, the City Mission driveway or block the footpath by parking over it. One member of the public was unable to get around a vehicle parked across the footpath last week, forcing them onto the road with their children. Efforts to ask the driver to move were ignored due to the driver having a conversation with another parent from our school!

School patrols have also witnessed parents parking on the yellow lines by the crossing and over driveways. Please do not park on the broken yellow lines by the crossing or outside the school gate. Please do not block our neighbours driveways.

Our school partrollers are there to help our tamariki cross the road safely. Please do not put our children at risk by parking illegaly or inconsiderately.

  • Try leaving earlier or later to find a car park.
  • Designate a pick-up up point or organise a walking school bus.
  • Car pool with families who live close.
  • If you need to turn around, please find a place well away from the school gate to do so. (NOT the church or City Mission driveways.)
  • SLOW DOWN as you approach the school crossing.

Please note that all complaints have been and will continue to be forwarded onto the Hutt City Council and the local community constable with photographs of offending vehicles. Due to these complaints, there will be a parking warden monitoring the way our school community behave at pick-up and drop-off times and tickets will be issued if you park illegally.
