Math In Action
Second Graders have deepened their understanding of flexibly using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction, and selecting an appropriate strategy in order to efficiently compute sums and differences by using the M2 Math Program: Connecting Number and Algebra with the Meerkats. The activities in the unit will help your child develop algebraic thinking with a fun “real world” problem solving activity. It includes work with variables, expressions and equations.
Third Graders have developed their understanding of how to solve an unknown-factor problem, by using division strategies and/or changing it to a multiplication problem. Students are using a tree map to classify and categorize three types of multiplication equations so they can easily identify them and work quickly to solve the word problems.
Fourth Graders are working on understanding how to multiply a whole number of up to three digits by a one-digit whole number, multiplying up to two two-digit numbers with place value understanding using area models, partial products, and the
properties of operations, and using models to make connections and develop the algorithm by using the M3 Math Program: How Big is Big? The activities in the unit will help your child practice multiplying large numbers, read and write big numbers, and investigate unusual multiplication patterns.
Fifth Graders received an introduction into multiplying decimals with a product to thousandths using models, drawings, or strategies based on place value and dividing a whole number by a decimal and divide a decimal by a whole number, using repeated subtraction or area models. They will continue to deepen their understanding of these topics during class. They have used Project M3 The Tenth Street Pet Sanctuary - Chapter 2 to make sense of multiplying and dividing decimals and exploring the concepts with various models.

Math Olympiad
Math Olympiad is a problem solving competition for students in grades 4 through 8. The goals of Math Olympiad are: To stimulate enthusiasm and a love for Mathematics To introduce important Mathematical concepts To teach major strategies for problem solving To develop Mathematical flexibility in solving problems To strengthen Mathematical intuition To foster Mathematical creativity and ingenuity To provide for the satisfaction, joy, and thrill of meeting challenges The highlights for students are the five monthly contests, administered from November through March. All Math Olympiad contests will occur in school and advanced notice of contest dates will be provided. Teams will be selected after December and participants will receive letters for their families.

Meet Ms. Burney
I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself and tell you how excited I am to work with your child this school year. Since the primary grades lay the foundation for your child’s educational career, it will be especially important that we work together to ensure your child’s success. Most of my classroom teaching experience has been with Mallard Creek Elementary, a partial LI/TD Magnet school in CMS. I have been teaching for 20 years. This is my first year as a Talent Development Catalyst teacher.
Growing and learning academically has always been a theme in my classroom. I expect academic growth from my scholars as I expect it from myself. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from North Carolina Central University with a Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education. I have an additional teaching certification for the Academically and Intellectually Gifted. I am also a National Board Certified Teacher. I taught first grade for fifteen years, I had one year of second grade, and four years of third grade. My teaching career spans across a few counties in North Carolina including Durham, Wake, and New Hanover.
I absolutely love to eat! I enjoy it so much so that I created an Instagram page for all my foodie adventures. I have two older sisters, an older and younger brother, and two loving, supportive parents. I love my big family, and enjoy my role as an aunt to five adorable nieces and a handsome nephew.
Again, I look forward to a great year! Thank you in advance for your support.
