What's Happening??
Everyone worked on creating or finishing their newspapers for their time capsules and also created images and words or phrases to cover the outside of our capsule with. We should be ready to finish and lock our capsules next week. If anyone wants to bring objects to place inside, they need to bring them next week and they need to be small enough to fit inside a shoebox.
We also did an Instant Challenge this week with dominoes. Students had to build a person, place, or thing with dominoes but the dominoes had to be connected with the matching numbers. They had to use all dominoes and create a story explaining their creation all in 5 minutes. Then they had to present their ideas to the rest of the class. They were awesome!!!
We did a Limitless Activity about how our emotions prevent us from pushing forward and how they can limit us sometimes from attempting a challenge or even attending a public event. We did a breathing activity where you stretch your arms as far as you can, take a deep breath, and then stretch a little further. Each time we breathe, we stretch a little more pushing beyond the limits we originally set for ourselves. We also discussed breaking the ceilings that we place on ourselves due to anxiety or fear.
7th grade took a look at personal FRAMES and how they impact how we make decisions in life and how they will connect to moral and ethical decision making. How can looking outside our FRAMES help us to be strong positive leaders.
Asynchronous Behaviors - Coping Skills and Growth Mindset
Humans are destined to place limitations upon themselves. Our brain may place a ceiling upon our perceived thoughts and abilities, but we CAN surpass those limits with coping skills. Perfectionism and imposter syndrome can create a fear of failure which causes us to avoid risk. It is vital to learn coping skills to overcome these fears.
Students will learn about the different strategies we can use to help guide us through this adventure we call life. They will create a plan of action for the problems in their lives they have control over. They will learn strategies they can use for the rest of their lives.
For example:
- Deal with your feelings
- Label your feelings
- Remind yourself it is OK to have the feelings
- Ask yourself what ways you can express those feelings SAFELY
- How can you help yourself feel better?
- 2. Adjust Your Attitude
Identify what you are thinking
Propose an alternative thinking
3. Discovering Your Choices
Look at your problem carefully
Write what you can change and what you cannot change
Choose one thing you can change, design a plan to respond.
4. Accept Imperfection
Recognize your mistake
Remind yourself no one and nothing is perfect
Propose an alternative to make it better, choose one thing you can change and design a plan to improve.
5. Give Yourself a Break
Acknowledge you need a break
Evaluate why
Design a plan to take a break
6. Take One Step At A Time
Identify what needs to be done
Prioritize the importance of each item on your agenda.
7. Be Kind to Yourself
Stop what you are doing and pay attention
Use patience with yourself!
Use gentle words (just like you would do if it were a friend)
8. Always Plan Ahead When You Can
Assess what you can plan for and what cannot
Produce a plan of action for the things you CAN plan for ahead of time.
9. Ask For Help (This is HUGE for those of us who feel it is a failure to ask for assistance!)
Analyze the efforts you have already made
Write a realistic plan for asking for assistance
Resources and Opportunities
I added the GAM Winter newsletter and it has a ton of opportunities for all age groups and some scholarships that you can put in your register for the future.
I added College for Kids last week. It is that time to start registering and for my new families I wanted to make you aware of a wonderful opportunity in our own community. College for Kids is a week-long camp for gifted students from all over the United States. It will be held at Westminster this year. I am teaching the first two sessions and would be happy to answer any questions anyone might have. The link below is to their website and the registration forms can be found on the 2021 dates section.
Last, DESE is offering GIfted and Talented Tuesdays which is a free ZOOM each week for a wide variety of people and things, but there is a section for students and it is space-themed this quarter.
