November 2019

Hello Hawthorne families,

As we move into November and the second quarter of the 2019-2020 school year, we have lots of things to celebrate at Hawthorne! And with Thanksgiving and the holiday season in our sights I am reminded of how truly grateful I am for the opportunity to lead Hawthorne and Torrence. I am thankful every day for the chance to work with your children and watch them grow. I am thankful to work alongside our staff to create and improve our systems to better fit our students. We're all working hard to create a positive educational experience for ALL of our students. Here are some things that we're working on at Hawthorne:

One of our building goals this year is to increase student proficiency in math. Last year, our staff received some professional development in regards to math interventions and math instruction. We are now beginning to implement these interventions and instructional strategies across all grade levels. We've just started to implementing interventions in the last week and are looking forward to seeing their impact.

PBIS assemblies

A second building goal at Hawthorne is to reduce student discipline referrals by introducing extra learning opportunities that will prompt more positive social interactions between students. We've introduced character words of the month and week. Each morning, we start our day by introducing these words on the morning announcements along with examples of how to demonstrate them while at school. Additionally, we've started monthly PBIS assemblies. These student allow us to acknowledge students for demonstrating character and to introduce the new character month with a skit performed by our teachers. We believe this added effort with pay off with students.

There has been an increased emphasis on STEM activities at Hawthorne. Some teachers have introduced STEM kits with challenges for students to build and create in the classroom. Other teachers and using our 1-to-1 technology to teach students about coding. Mrs. Holsted has introduced activities in art where students get to design, build, and collaborate on projects. These activities provide students an opportunity to build a foundation of skills that will benefit them well past high school and into the 21st century.

We love our Little Chiefs and we're thankful for the opportunity to provide the foundation for their future education!

Thankfully yours,

Mr. Marsden
