A NOTE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Dear Howard Families!
Things have really gotten off to a great start this year. As you might have learned during our Open House on Tuesday, Howard now has a school-wide behavior system. This system focuses on the positive things our students do each day. They have many opportunities to “clip up” and earn High Five Tickets. There are classroom and school-wide incentives for earning High Fives. It has been so amazing watching our Hornets model behavior in the hallways, cafeteria, playground, classrooms, and restroom. Please take the time to encourage them to do their best at school so they can be sure to earn their way to the quarterly reward program.
BIG thanks to all of the volunteers who have helped out with Kindergarten and First-Grade lunchtimes. This has made such a difference. The students are getting better and better each day with the cafeteria routines. If you ever want to come in a help out during any of our lunchtimes, we will gladly take your help. 4th-6th grade eat from 11:30-12:00, Kindergarten and 1st eat from 12:00-12:30 and 2nd and 3rd eat from 12:30-1:00. There is always something to open, sweep or wipe down!
Open House was a great success! I love seeing all of you here. It is the little things like that that make a difference for your children. If you couldn't make it to Open House, no worries, we have many other things planned ahead this year you can attend with your children.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Welcome back, Howard Hornets! I hope everyone had a nice and relaxing summer break. I feel like summer flew by, but I am so excited to be back in the swing of another exciting school year here at Howard Elementary. I introduced myself to both kindergarten classes this week and read them one of my favorite books, "The Pout-Pout Fish." I have also had the pleasure of eating lunch with all of our new students. We have a lot of new faces this year, and it was fun getting to know each of them at our new student lunch. I will be back in the classrooms very soon with my monthly counseling lessons and I cannot wait!
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

TITLE 1 NEWS
Howard Elementary has a Title I “Schoolwide Program.” This means that the Title I funds and staff can be utilized to benefit ALL students at Howard. Title I is a federally funded program, and we serve ANY student who could benefit from either occasional or frequent small group or one-on-one instruction.
Mrs. Schaaf and Mrs. Eller are the Title I teachers, and we service students by going into classrooms or pulling students out individually or in small groups for additional instruction or review. We offer “Buzz Bags” which are reading and math games we can send home that are for parents to play with their child. We also host a “Bingo for Books” at the PTO Fish Fry in the fall. Mrs. DeVault and Miss Bowlin also assist us in servicing students.
We would be happy to meet with you at your request and at your convenience to discuss our program if you have any questions. Our web page includes information pertinent to our program as well. You may reach us by calling the school or by one of the following email addresses: diana.schaaf@nwsc.k12.in.us, vicki.eller@nwsc.k12.in.usMAKERSPACE NEWS
