Please complete the district survey to provide us with feedback about the school year. This survey went out centrally last week and closes today, Sunday, October 4, 2020.
Fully Virtual Kdg-1st Grade Students- VIRTUAL TESTING TOMORROW
Tomorrow, Monday, 10/5/2020, Mrs. Vultaggio (our Title One Teacher) will be conducting VIRTUAL reading/math testing with ALL virtual kindergarteners and first graders.
Please be sure you're signed up for a 10-minute slot on Monday and ensure that your child is logged into the virtual meeting at that time. Please don't log in early (or late), as that may interfere with another student's test.

Parents- please be available to aid with any tech issues during your child's test, but please don't help them at all with the content of the tests. These tests provide us with insight about the level of academic support that each child needs to receive during the school year.
First grade parents: Please note that your child's classroom teacher may be reaching out to schedule a separate reading testing time- for those of you that weren't already tested.

DON'T FORGET TO SUBMIT THE STUDENT HEALTH SCREENER FOR EACH IN-PERSON DAY

It's so important that we're vigilant about monitoring our symptoms and that we stay home when we're feeling off.
Parent Support During Virtual Testing
Students who report for Face-To-Face instruction will complete these tests in their classroom with their teacher.
For families that are completing these tests virtually, please make sure that the student completes the tests independently. Parents can help with tech issues, but parents should not help students with the content of the test at all (reading it to them, etc). We need a true representation of what each child knows so that we can help each child accordingly.
The same applies to unit testing for all subject areas. We don't assign letter grades on student report cards, but rather assess each child's mastery of a variety of skills. If parents help their child with their tests and exit tickets, we won't know whether a child is struggling with the content- so it can hinder their learning.
If you're unsure about which items you should be helping your child work through (i.e. daily activities, some homework) and which items your child needs to do independently, please check with your child's teacher.
MyON Reading Program
Over the next several weeks, FPS will be rolling out myON to K-6 students. With myON, students will get access to thousands of digital books- and so much more. Increasing students' access to reading materials can increase reading engagement and, in turn, result in reading growth.
Executive Functioning, Self-Regulation, and Setting Routines
Executive function and self-regulation skills are the mental processes that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully. Just as an air traffic control system at a busy airport safely manages the arrivals and departures of many aircraft on multiple runways, the brain needs this skill set to filter distractions, prioritize tasks, set and achieve goals, and control impulses.
(SOURCE: https://developingchild.harvard.edu/science/key-concepts/executive-function/)
When children have opportunities to develop executive function and self-regulation skills, we help set them up for success in school and in life. Children need us to teach these skills, and we are doing this each day at Edison. At home, families can help us with this by setting a consistent daily schedule for your students and helping them with organizing their daily and weekly tasks.
For more ideas about how parents can support their student's executive function skills, here's a short article with links to some other resources:

Attendance Counts
If your child is going to be absent, for either a virtual day (half or full) or an in-person, small group day, please call them into our attendance line: 586-439-6590
If your child is absent from their homeroom/grade level virtual meetings, they will receive an absence in PowerSchool. If there are extenuating circumstances for a given meeting (i.e. failed connection, etc)- please email your child's teacher to inform them of the situation so they can code it appropriately in PowerSchool.
Technology Help
- To submit Help Tickets for technology problems, please use our Device and Instructional Support Form. A member of our technology team will reach out to help you.
- Unfortunately, we don't have any trained technology teamed members available to field phone calls in the office, so the above JotForm is the best way to get help with programs/devices.
