Jerry Ross Newsletter 8-23-2019
Welcome Back!
From Ms. Linsley
Thank you for helping us get off to a fantastic start.
I am starting my 17th year as the principal of Jerry Ross Elementary School and we had the smoothest and most successful start to date.
We have some new teachers and staff members at Jerry Ross this year. Miss Kieltyka is our newest 4th grade teacher and Mrs. Sexson joined our 5th grade team.
Mrs. Vassil, long time art teacher for Winfield and Jerry Ross, retired to move closer to her children in Decatur, Indiana. Her artistic talent is displayed all over our schools and in the children she taught over the years. Jennifer Popp, one of Mrs. Vassil's former students, is the new art teacher for Winfield and Jerry Ross.
Mrs. Beck is our new cafeteria manager and Mrs. Schafer will be starting as our new school nurse after Labor Day. Mrs. Arena has been the only nurse our school has ever had since we opened in 2003. She cared for thousands of children and we thank her for 16 years of loving and dedicated service and we wish her well.
Ashley Kieltyka, 4th Grade
Jennifer Popp, Art Teacher
Sarah Sexson, 5th Grade
Important Reminders for Parents
- During drop off in the morning, parents should only use the inner lane closest to the school building. The doors open at 8:50 a.m., but we have adult supervision at the door by 8:45 or earlier every day.
- If you need to pick up your child from school early, you may call the office to let us know. However, we do not pull students out of class until the parent arrives. This prevents students from missing additional minutes of instruction and sitting in the office waiting. If your child and the teacher know your child is leaving early, it should take less than two minutes for your child to come to the office.
- Parents are allowed to have lunch with their children in the cafeteria if they have filled out a background check. Also, no outside restaurant food, such as McDonald's or Pizza Hut, is allowed in the cafeteria.
- If you would like to purchase school ice cream for your child's homeroom class for his or her birthday, please contact Mrs. Beck in the cafeteria. We do not allow baked goods or treats for birthday celebrations due to severe food allergies.
From Mrs. Maynor
Wow! Things have kicked off with a bang! I truly enjoy seeing all the students be so excited and ready to return to school. I would like to welcome everyone back and introduce myself to all our new parents! My name is Mrs. Andre`anna Maynor and I am your child’s school counselor! This will be my 2nd year here at Jerry Ross and I love every minute of it! Previously, I was a child and behavior therapist within the NWI area. So you may be wondering…
What does an elementary school counselor do?
A school counselor assists administrators, teachers, and other school staff in promoting appropriate and healthy child development, learning strategies, self-management, and social skills. School counselors do not work alone, but rather play an integrative role within the total educational program at their respective school.
School counselors work with students on such topics as:
• Feelings
• Friendships
• Goal setting
• Grief
• Stress
• Coping Skills
School counselors also collaborate in indirect student services by providing students and their families with resources within the community for additional assistance and information when needed.
School counselors are AWESOME!
