Election of 1964

  • JFK was assassinated, LBJ took over
  • Democrats then elected LBJ in 1964
  • Republican candidate was Barry Goldwater
  • Goldwater ran a radical campaign, he was against the TVC, income taxes, civil rights, and the Great Society
  • LBJ's election was a landslide

Johnson's Great Society

  • Johnson declared a war on poverty
  • His Great Society legislation was reform minded and combatted poverty
  • Passed:
  1. Medicare- Insurance/healthcare for the elderly
  1. Medicaid- Insurance/healthcare for the poor
  2. Civil Right Act of 1964- Gave the government more powers to combat segregation and employment discrimination
  3. Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, - abolishing the quota system and doubling the amount of immigrants

24th amendment

  • In 1964 the 24th amendment was passed
  • Johnson realized not enough African Americans were voting
  • The amendment abolished all poll taxes

Civil and Voting Rights Act

  • Civil Rights Act of 1964 - Banned most employment discrimination and segregation in schools
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965 - Banned literacy tests and enforced voter registers in Southern States

The Infamous year of 1968

  • NV Tet Offensive was an astounding victory that captured 27 SV cities
  • America would freeze its troop levels and begin to withdraw
  • Johnson declared he would not run for another presidency
  • Robert Kennedy was assassinated
  • Richard Nixon was elected in the Republican primary

Tonkin Gulf Resolution and Vietnam War

  • US Navy raided North Vietnam with the cooperation of South Vietnam
  • N.V. attacked the navy on August 2nd
  • Johnson seized on the moment and declared it unprovoked
  • He got the Tonkin Gulf Resolution passed allowing him to essentially declare war without the passage of congress in Indochina
  • Raised his popularity to get him reelected
