Election of 1964
- JFK was assassinated, LBJ took over
- Democrats then elected LBJ in 1964
- Republican candidate was Barry Goldwater
- Goldwater ran a radical campaign, he was against the TVC, income taxes, civil rights, and the Great Society
- LBJ's election was a landslide
Johnson's Great Society
- Johnson declared a war on poverty
- His Great Society legislation was reform minded and combatted poverty
- Passed:
- Medicare- Insurance/healthcare for the elderly
- Medicaid- Insurance/healthcare for the poor
- Civil Right Act of 1964- Gave the government more powers to combat segregation and employment discrimination
- Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, - abolishing the quota system and doubling the amount of immigrants
24th amendment
- In 1964 the 24th amendment was passed
- Johnson realized not enough African Americans were voting
- The amendment abolished all poll taxes
Civil and Voting Rights Act
- Civil Rights Act of 1964 - Banned most employment discrimination and segregation in schools
- Voting Rights Act of 1965 - Banned literacy tests and enforced voter registers in Southern States
The Infamous year of 1968
- NV Tet Offensive was an astounding victory that captured 27 SV cities
- America would freeze its troop levels and begin to withdraw
- Johnson declared he would not run for another presidency
- Robert Kennedy was assassinated
- Richard Nixon was elected in the Republican primary
Tonkin Gulf Resolution and Vietnam War
- US Navy raided North Vietnam with the cooperation of South Vietnam
- N.V. attacked the navy on August 2nd
- Johnson seized on the moment and declared it unprovoked
- He got the Tonkin Gulf Resolution passed allowing him to essentially declare war without the passage of congress in Indochina
- Raised his popularity to get him reelected
