Niche 2020 School Rankings

Much like sports teams are ranked, schools are also ranked by varying organizations. Niche is one such ranking service. The Dunlap elementary schools were ranked 83, 90, 93, 124, and 130 respectively with Ridgeview being the 93rd ranked school out of over 2,200 schools in the state. This doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things, other than validating the work that our teachers, students, and parents are doing to provide a fantastic education for our students. Our primary goal is not to become the highest ranked school, rather it is to strive to meet the needs of all of our students' diverse social-emotional and academic needs and challenging them to reach their fullest potential. I wanted to share this with you more as a thank you for all you do to support our students and our school. For more information on these rankings, you can go to the Niche website.

School Spirit Wear Day

Monday, October 5 is designated as our school Spirit Wear Day for both in-person and remote learners. Wear your favorite RES wear that day and/or orange and green to showcase your school pride!

Birthday Treats

During this phase of reopening, all Dunlap elementary schools are postponing birthday treats. Dunlap elementary schools are trying to limit, to the best of our ability, items being brought into school from the outside. Your child's birthday will still be recognized and celebrated within their classroom.

NO SCHOOL on Election Day

On May 22, 2020, the Governor signed a law that makes November 3, 2020 (Election Day) a paid holiday for all governmental workers. This will close all public schools in Illinois for the day. This came well after we had approved our school calendar so an adjustment will have to be made. Various school groups like the Illinois Association of School Administrators, Illinois Principals Association, Illinois Education Association, and Illinois Federation of Teachers have worked with the Illinois State Board of Education and the Governor's office to try and have a teachers institute, school improvement day, or a waiver for this holiday since it was signed into law so late in the year and after school calendars had been published. Those requests have been denied, so there will be no school on November 3, 2020. Please mark your calendars accordingly.

NO SCHOOL October 14

Wednesday, October 14 is designated as a remote instructional planning day. Students will not be in attendance that day, however, teachers may reach out to select students to work on catching up on missing work. There are 5 of these days allotted to all school districts and this is the first such day that we have used this year. This also happens to be the day that SAT's are administered to high school students. Due to the need to spread students out during SAT tests, there will be a need to use additional schools to administer the SAT tests.

BIST Behavioral Seminars for Parents

We had a fair number of parents register for the BIST parenting sessions on supporting your child's social-emotional and behavioral needs. I have learned that these are being made available for all parents and I have permission to provide you with access to the recorded versions of these webinars due to our ongoing partnership with BIST. These recorded sessions are included below. For more information on the BIST philosophy that we model at Ridgeview and several of our other schools, go to bist.org.

Chromebook Tech Support for Remote Learners

The Ridgeview website has a 1:1 Technology button that will help answer the majority of parent questions regarding Canvas FAQ, Chromebook care and Google/Chromebook FAQ. Take some time to familiarize yourself with where to go to find technology assistance.

If you are experiencing any issues with your Chromebook, and cannot find the answers to your questions on any of the tabs in the 1:1 Technology button on the Ridgeview website, please contact the Dunlap IT help desk at helpdesk@dunlapstudents.net.

Classroom teachers will not be able to support any issues with technology aside from general login instructions for district platforms.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

2020 Virtual Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, October 22nd from 12:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and Friday, October 23rd from 7:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.. There will be no school for students on these days. Also, due to the complexity of online conferences, these meetings will be traditional parent-teacher conferences and NOT student led. Online scheduling will open to parents October 2nd and will close at the end of the day on Thursday, October 15th. Below you will find instructions on how to schedule a conference and how to use Google Meets to enter your parent-teacher conference meeting at your scheduled time.

Wetlands Revitalization Project

We are off and running on plans to revitalize our wetlands space at Ridgeview. This space was originally created shortly after the opening of the school in the early 2000's as an authentic wetlands area. While the wetlands portion of the space has remained intact and still collects water, the remainder of the space had become overgrown over the course of the years.

We have partnered with the PTO to create plans to reclaim this space and build on the wetlands space a certified outdoor classroom space. The PTO has played a key role in the important initial phase of the project by getting the land cleared, soliciting several high quality bench seats, and procuring plans for a certified outdoor classroom. The space looks completely different already!

What's next? Well, we need to finalize our outdoor classroom plans and determine the next steps in building this space. A big part of the next steps include procuring funding to make it happen. The PTO and staff members (Mrs. Chambers and Mrs. Eppel) that are part of the committee have committed to raising funds this year with the sole purpose of making our outdoor classroom space a reality. This year's Halloween Hustle fundraiser will be devoted to this cause. Our committee has also taken initiative to procure additional funding through grant opportunities as well. More details of our plans will be made available as they are developed.

Ridgeview Halloween Hustle

The PTO will be hosting its annual fundraiser event for the year, The Halloween Hustle, on Friday, October 30th. This fun run takes place during PE classes for in person learners and will be done virtually through Flipgrid for remote learners. More details to come later on this. All funds generated will go toward our school goal of revitalizing our outdoor wetlands space and turning it into a certified outdoor classroom space for all grade levels. Plans are being developed now for this future space.
