Getting to Know Gables: Mr. Baker

Welcome, Mr. Barry Baker, our new Gables School Counselor! This is his first year at Gables (he spent the last 11 years at Centennial HS) and his sixth year as elementary counselor. He has two children, a daughter in preschool and a son in 1st Grade. Being a parent of elementary school kids is what ultimately drew him back to the elementary level.

Favorite Color: Navy Blue

Fun Fact: He's officially been a member of the Girl Scouts but never the Boy Scouts.

Role at Gables: School Counselor. School counselors help remove barriers to academic success by focusing on social and emotional learning. They also help prepare students for college and career.

What does that mean?! Parents and kids can reach out to Mr. Baker for help when there are big life events such as a death in the family or moving from one place to another - anything that might occupy a child's attention and make learning at school more challenging. He can also help families find community agencies or outside resources for more serious, ongoing, mental health issues.

Mr. Baker around Gables: In addition to brief, solution-focused, one-on-one counseling, Mr. Baker partners with the homeroom teachers to give lessons in social and emotional learning in the classroom. He also leads small, special-purpose groups. For instance, his Homework Help group will show kids a way to set goals and make better choices when it comes to completing their homework.

How to reach Mr. Baker: Email is best at bbaker4881@columbus.k12.oh.us. He's only in the school building part-time (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), but he monitors email every day.
