National Blue Ribbon School and Exceeding Expectations!
October was a month of recognition for the schools of Lorenzo Walker. On October 1st, Betsy Devos, the United States Secretary of Education announced and recognized the 349 schools who earned the 2018 National Blue Ribbon status. Lorenzo Walker Technical High School was on that list as an “Exemplary High Performing School”!
The National Blue Ribbon program has been around since 1982. During its 36 years, the National Blue Ribbon Schools program has bestowed this prestigious designation on only approximately 8,800 schools. The National Blue Ribbon recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing the achievement gaps. Lorenzo Walker Technical High School was listed as among the highest performing schools as measured by state assessments. Only 12 public and private schools earned the National Blue Ribbon School status in the state of Florida this year. There have only ever been three schools in Collier County who have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools (Naples Christian Academy in 2007, Seagate in 2008 & 2018, and Lorenzo Walker, 2018).
Receiving the designation as an “Exemplary High Performing School” for a Title I Public High School is even rarer. In the state of Florida, there has only been one other Title I Public High School to meet that criteria since 1982. There have only been 71 other schools in the United States since 1982.
The National Blue Ribbon status recognizes and honors the hard work of our staff, students and families for creating a welcoming school environment for all, while teachers engage students in relevant, real-world college and career ready curriculum. On November 7th, Dr. Patton, Superintendent of CCPS, will accompany me and staff members Mrs. Lambley, Mrs. Barr and Ms. Meghreblian to Washington D.C. to accept the award and represent Collier County. We will have a school ceremony for students and staff on November 5th, prior to the Washington D.C. trip.
LWTHS also became an Exceeding Expectations school for the 2nd time (2014, 2018). Lorenzo Walker was one of only 26 schools who earned the Exceeding Expectations designation for 2018 and we were the only high school in Florida.
Mrs. Lambley, Mrs. Elliott and Ms. Crete represented LWTHS & LWTC to receive the award on October 4. On October 5, they presented and shared successful strategies with attendees and other award schools about, “Creating a Culture of Relationships Leading to Rigor, Relevance, and Results”. It was a great opportunity to network, learn and replicate proven strategies that lead to the success of students. Below is information relating to ECTAC and the Exceeding Expectations Project and how schools are selected.
In 2012, ECTAC launched the Exceeding Expectations (E2) Project. From a database of all schools in the State, an ECTAC data analysis team identifies Title I schools that are exceeding expectations by showing significant progress in improving student achievement. Schools with 50% to 100% of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch are first selected using criteria based on School Grade data obtained from the FDOE database. These schools are then visited by a team of ECTAC members for interviews and classroom observations. After careful review of a combination of criteria consisting of Florida State Assessment scores and observations and interviews that occurred during our site visits, schools are identified as either a Finalist, or Award School.
I am extremely proud to be a part of the Lorenzo Walker family! Congratulations Mustangs!
