Message From Principal Engdall
Greeting Shaw Montessori!
Each year the Arizona Department of Education ranks our public/charter schools based on student performance of the spring high stakes test that is administered to our 3rd-8th graders with the Arizona Academic Standards Assessment (AASA) assessment. Other factors are figured into the grade, but a large percentage is assessment performance based on student growth. I am proud to announce that through the hard work of our students, staff, and parents, we received an “A” rating for the 21/22 school year! Thank you for supporting our community by having your students at school on time every day, by making sure that they are doing their iReady homework daily and by giving so generously of your time and love! Montessori truly is an amazing pedagogical practice, and we are lucky to belong to a public school/district that supports and believes in the power and potential of each child.
Next Wednesday, we will celebrate the International Day of the Child. This is a day where children may represent the ethnicity of their family with traditional dress and food. We will begin the day with our “Small World Parade” and presentations on our sports field. The celebrations will continue in the classrooms. Please be on the lookout for an email from your child’s teacher as to how they will be celebrating. You are welcome to join us to view the parade and presentations, please bring seating or blankets and plan to stay for the entire duration of the presentations.
Wishing you the very best,
Principal Engdall

Social Emotional Learning/Wellness Survey Student surveys and check-ins are a vital tool for helping schools and districts better serve your children. The collection of feedback provides invaluable insight on the experiences and needs of our students.
Schools and districts use information collected from surveys to develop resources and evaluate the efficacy of instruction, programs or policies. Our students will be asked to complete an online survey that encourages them to reflect on their own mindsets and approaches to learning.
Topics covered include emotional regulation, self-efficacy, sense of belonging, teacher-student relationships, social perspective-taking, school climate, self-management, social awareness and school safety. The information collected will be used to guide decisions about the implementation of social-emotional learning/wellness initiatives and the impact it is having on students generally.
A copy of the survey can be found at: 3-5 Survey; 6-8 Survey
In compliance with A.R.S. 15-117, the district is required to receive parental consent for surveys that solicit personal information about students in a wide variety of categories. This means Phoenix Elementary School District must seek parent/guardian consent before administering our social-emotional learning/wellness efforts and initiatives. We value your child’s participation in this survey.
Please complete the attached permission form. If you do not complete the form, your child will not be surveyed. If this form is not completed, your student will be unable to participate in the fall survey administration process.

Do you know what the Day of the Dead is?
The Day of the Dead is a celebration of remembering your family and friends who have passed away. People celebrate by eating sweet treats like sugar cookies shaped like a skull to honor our friends and family who have passed. On the Day of the Dead people make something called an Ofrenda where they put traditional flowers called marigolds and food with pictures of relatives who have passed.
Some of the art for the Day of the Dead is sugar skulls and flowers. They are commonly seen on the Day of the Dead. A lot of people like to get tattoos of skulls. Not scary skulls. They are skulls for Día de los Muertos with flowers and they have a big meaning to them. Dia de los Muertos means Day of the Dead in Spanish. On the Day of the Dead, they hand out Pan de Muerto (bread of the dead), salt, skulls, conchas, and marigold.
The Day of the Dead is November 1st and ends on the 2nd and you should celebrate it too!

Garden Update
Greetings!
I hope everyone had a relaxing and fun fall break! I extended mine by two days and returned on Wednesday. It felt good to be back! The 7th and 8th grades learned a new quote this week, “Bad news is that time flies. Good news is that you’re the pilot!” I’ve been lecturing them about making good use of their spare time. Pick up a new hobby. Try something different. Get off your phones! Good luck with that one, parents.
We started learning about Dia de los Muertos. I wanted to design some ofrendas (altars) but decided to veer right and focus on death. Death is a subject that our culture avoids. We bury it with grief and sadness and try to forget about it. Dia de los Muertos, however, is a joyous holiday. It celebrates the dead and revels in the perpetuity of the soul. There is no better metaphor for the cycle of life and death than in the garden. We plant, nurture our plants, harvest our plants, pull our plants, compost our plants, spread the compost on the soil, and repeat this process. This cycle shows the students the perpetuity of life and the energy around it. Nothing ever really dies; it just takes another form.
We have a new rooster on campus! His name is Hanz. Go say ‘hi’ if you get a chance. And yes, I’m still working on acquiring some visiting goats.
I created a survey about our garden program! Please share your feedback with me by completing the Google survey below. Just click the link: https://forms.gle/c7wrfvXK2jZik5meA
I am asking for a classroom volunteer to purchase vermicomposting bins for their child’s classroom. Each class needs two totes. They both need to be the same size and can be anywhere from a 12 Gallon to a 27 Gallon. Here’s a link to the Home Depot totes:
Here’s my email in case you need to reach me: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds, eggshells and bottle caps. You can leave them on the table outside the front office except for the bottle caps. Have your child drop them in their classroom bin.
If you have any flagstone cuts or wood cuts we will also take them. We will also accept any tool donations for the field garden and/or ODE.
Enjoy your weekend!
Mr. Moench
