Calling All HPE Families!
In an effort to continue learning and growing together, the HPE Equity and Diversity team would like to put together a small panel of parents who would share their perspectives and personal experiences with HPE staff. This parent panel would focus on ways we can support, communicate, and be more inclusive of our HPE students and families. We are planning for this panel to meet one evening after spring break. If you would be interested in learning more about this planned work, please contact Christina Vetter, HPE ENL Teacher/Equity Coach at cvetter@hse.k12.in.us or 317-915-4210.
Counselor's Corner
Hello HPE families!
This week and next week I will be visiting classrooms to teach students about conflict resolution. During the lesson, we talk about what conflict is and steps we can use to resolve it. We also talk about how to apologize to someone in a meaningful way. The 4 Conflict Resolution steps that we talk about are: Stop (before we react), Watch our words- (use a calm voice, nice words, no put downs), Listen Up (listen to what the other person has to say), and Find a Solution (compromise). We also talked about that when we apologize, we need to: look the person in the eye, say sorry for what we've done, and tell how we will fix it in the future. The lessons have been great and I'm looking forward to visiting all classes!
Sincerely,
Bethany Magill
HPE Counselor

BoxTops contest!
Please send in any clipped BoxTops for Education and label with your classroom teacher name. If you are using the new app and scanning your BoxTops, there is a new feature on the box top app. You can now enter a group name when scanning receipts to keep track of individual groups within HPE. Enter classroom teacher name, not child's, so scanned box tops can be tracked as well for the classroom contest. The class with the most clipped and scanned BoxTops will be awarded a pizza party in the spring! Runner up classes will receive extra recess!

Easy Ways to Help the PTO
Cut your Box Tops for Education and send them to school with your student at any time. Visit www.boxtops4education.com for a list of products.
If you shop on Amazon or at Kroger, check out these completely free and zero effort ways to raise money for the HPE PTO. The prices are the same, the service is the same, you shop the same way, but a portion of the purchase price will be donated to the PTO, that’s it!
On Amazon, just go to smile.amazon.com/ch/20-0114174 to link your account to the PTO and then check out using smile.amazon.com everytime--you cannot access this through an app so fill up your cart and then open a browser to check out or shop directly on smile.amazon.com.
For Kroger, login to your online account or create one using the Kroger Plus Card number you already have or get a new one. Then go to www.kroger.com/communityrewards and enroll in Community Rewards. Search for “VA241” and select “HARRISON PARKWAY ELEMENTARY - PTO.” Then scan your Kroger Plus Card or enter your alternate ID every time you check out just like you always have.

Safe Visitor Badges

To find the Safe Visitor app, search for “SafeVisitor” (there is no space in between the words).
Looking up names can lead to the wrong person being signed in. Upon leaving, please let the office staff know so they can sign you out.
If you have questions/concerns or need to have your badge re-emailed to you, please contact -Vicki Foutty at 317-594-4100.
Volunteering and the Background Check Process
Parents/visitors to HPE must have a background check on file with the school (including watching the anti-bullying video and completing the video survey) in order to volunteer in the school or to have lunch with a student. The link for the background check information can be found on link below at https://www.hseschools.org/services/other/school-safety/visiting-and-volunteering
The background checks are conducted by a 3rd party company, and there is a $13.00 fee for processing (payable online at the time of the application). Once completed, approved background checks are valid for a period of 3 years. Applicants will be notified via email when their background check has been completed and they will also notify people 30 days before their background check expires.

Lost and Found
Harrison Parkway Elementary has a Lost & Found located outside of the Music Room for any lost items. At the end of each month, we will be donating any leftover items to charities that serve people in need.
We have a lot of items starting to accumulate on the table. Please have your student check it out if they are missing items.
Nurse Notes – Health Tips
Water! Water! Water!!! Please encourage your child to drink water. Water helps rejuvenate and flush the body system, and with the dry air, it keeps the body hydrated decreasing nose bleeds.
Remind your child to take the time to Wash! Wash! Wash your hands!!! Hand washing truly helps stop germs from spreading. With cold and flu season in full swing, please remind your child to cover their cough and sneeze and to wash their hands immediately after each cough/sneeze as well as after blowing their nose. Hands should be washed in warm water and scrubbed with soap for at least 20 seconds, your child can sing the Happy Birthday song twice or Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star to help ensure scrubbing is lasting for 20 seconds.
Illness: If your student is ill with fever or vomiting they must be kept home until fever or vomit free for twenty-four (24) hours with out the use of medications. A fever is defined as an oral temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or greater.
Recess: All students are expected to participate in recess each day. District Policy states that the students will go outside if the temperature is above 15 degrees with the wind chill factored in. Students not able to participate may bring a note from home or from their physician. School policy only allows a student to use a note from home for three days, after which the parent note must be replaced by a Doctors note. Parents need to communicate any recess excuse to the nurse and the teacher. PLEASE, dress your child appropriately with coats, hats and mittens. You can take layers off but you can't put them on if you don't have them!
Report a Student Absence
If your child will be absent from school, please contact us at (317) 915-4210. You may call and leave a message on our attendance line anytime before 8:00 a.m. After 8:00 a.m., our office staff will be available to speak with you and document your child's absence. It is important to let us know your child will be absent or late arrival prior to 9:00 a.m.
If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (link below) at least one week prior to the absence. If you notify your child's teacher of an absence via email, please make sure you also contact the office by phone or email (apowell@hse.k12.in.us) to ensure that attendance is marked appropriately.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.
