CLIMATE STRIKE SEPTEMBER 20-27
GLOBAL CLIMATE STRIKE SEPTEMBER 20-27
Twenty-six student councils in CA, TX, NC, NM, OR, and DC have passed non-partisan climate action resolutions, as has the California Association of Student Councils. Schools4ClimateAction (@Schools4Climate) contacted me to share information with Oklahoma.
So who are the individuals behind this movement? Jonah Gottlieb is a high school senior and the Schools for Climate Action Director. Avery Reed is a high school senior and current president of the California Association of Student Councils (CASC). She was instrumental in passing 4 climate action resolutions, including the CASC resolution which represents 6.3 million California students. Devin Del Palacio is a school board trustee in Arizona and the Chair-Elect of the National Black Council of School Board Members (the first national education organization to pass a climate action resolution) and is an S4CA advisory board member.
Nancy Metzger-Carter is a Sonoma Academy teacher who teaches a sustainability class and is very active with her students in the S4CA campaign (~10% of SA students lost homes in a climate-related wildfire in 2017, so advocating for climate is very important for that school community). Nancy led a youth-adult team that met with Sen. Inhofe's office in June. If any OK student councils, school boards, PTAs, or teachers' unions pass climate action resolutions, Sen. Inhofe's office will be very interested! Oklahoma students and schools have an incredible opportunity to help shape the context by which Congress treats climate change.
Below please find a toolkit, which is a powerpoint for sharing information about the movement as well as action items and a sample letter you can edit and send to your school board. I've also included an article on climate that the Oklahoman ran today.
