Klem South Penguin Press
November 2020
It has been a busy and unique start to the month of November! We changed the clocks, bundled up to welcome the first snow and now we are cracking the windows to soak in the warmer temperatures! Our Rochester weather has prepared us all to be flexible and able to adapt to whatever is thrown our way!
Whether your child is part of the hybrid or remote model, we thank you for your continued support at home. We know this is NOT easy and you have had to assist in your child's learning process like never before. We cannot emphasize the importance of communication enough. Each family has different circumstances at home and our staff ready and eager to collaborate with you! If you need support, please do reach out to your child's classroom teacher first.
Thank you to those who took the time to complete the Webster Parent Feedback Survey. Our staff is currently reviewing the results of the survey and working to best address your feedback. It is helpful for us to know your perspective and although we may not be able to accommodate all requests, we are reviewing the information carefully.
As we embark upon the Thanksgiving holiday, we are reminded of the importance of community, family and gratitude. This year is different from others as we plan and consider how to celebrate Thanksgiving in the midst of a pandemic. On behalf of the Klem South family, we do wish you have Happy Thanksgiving. We are grateful and honored to work on behalf of your children each day.
Warmly,
Martha End
Principal

On November 13th, we will celebrate World Kindness Day. Theis international holiday was formed in 1998 to promote kindness throughout the world. To celebrate, we will encourage students and staff to wear cardigan sweaters in honor of Mr. Rogers. Here are some additional activities to promote in at home:
Commit to at least 3 Random Acts of Kindness
Give extra long hugs (to members of your immediate family :))
Write a love poem to yourself or a loved one
Discuss ways to show and promote kindness in school, at home and within our communities
Alma and How She Got Her Name
The Hispanic Heritage Month committee has put together a fun project for our elementary students. The story, Alma and How She Got Her Name, is a wonderful book about a hispanic child with a really long name. She didn't like her long name until she learned about where it came from and began to feel proud of her special name.
Here is a google slides presentation that contains a read aloud of the story (on slide 2) along with information about a Flipgrid project that your family can participate in to share the story of your child(ren)'s name(s). This is a perfect project for the asynchronous portion of the school day or for a time when your family can sit down together to share the story of your names with each other.
We hope you choose to participate and we look forward to hearing the story of your name!
Fine Arts Remidners
- Upcoming Switch Date for Art & Music - November 9th. K-2 will be attending Music, 3-5 will be attending Art. Codes for SeeSaw and Google Classroom have been shared with classroom teachers to help students get signed in for their upcoming sessions. Google Meet links for LIVE instruction will begin on November 9th.
- Art Supplies ready to go!! Gr. 3-5 hybrid students will receive their materials at school to take home and use during their Art time. Remote students will have theirs delivered next Wednesday, Nov 4 so they can join in at the same time. K-2 students will receive an Art Supply packet before the next changeover of instruction in January.
- 4th Grade Instrumental Sign-Up Survey - all 4th Gr families received this link through Infinite Campus to let us know their child's interest, and family readiness, to begin some Instrumental instruction through Band or Orchestra. We have 192 responses already from across the 7 buildings. This information will help us shape a staffing / resources picture for January. We look forward to working with our 4th Grade Musicians!

Tips for Structuring Remote Time
One common area of concern for families is how to structure the remote school day better. Grammarly recently shared tips as families work to establish new routines in response to a shift in the model of schooling (the full article is available at https://www.grammarly.com/blog/distance-learning/. Having a toolkit of time management strategies to choose from can help students maximize their productivity and aid parents in a more balanced approach to at-home learning. Here were some common tips:
Set a schedule
Support your child to prioritize the work load
Help children stay focused
Build in breaks
Make a plan for screen time
Check in with teachers
Don’t forsake sleep
Make room for Mental Health
