Instructional Highlight of the Week
Genetic Mutations in Flight?
This week, students in Ms. Hoffman’s 8th grade Integrated Science class applied their knowledge of genetic mutations by building and testing paper airplanes. The lesson had students working in triads. The challenge was to build an airplane that would stay airborne for an extended period of time. One student served as an engineer, designing the plane. The engineer wrote specific instructions on how to build the structure and delivered them to the other two students who were required to interpret the instructions and build the structure as designed. Talking was prohibited and no questions could be asked of the designer. Teams tested their planes in three trials, recording their results and observations. Upon returning to the classroom, roles reversed, with two students becoming the engineers and communicating to one builder. Again, three trials took place. Predictably, the structures built during phase two were much improved. Ms. Hoffman facilitated the students in debriefing their learning and connecting it back to their understanding of DNA and genetic mutations in nature. The video below offers a glimpse into what took place.
