ELAR TEKS Revisions
First Drafts of Recommendations for Revision to the English Language Arts and Reading TEKS (Nov. 2015)
As some of you might know, the State Board of Education (SBOE) has the legislative authority to adopt the TEKS for each subject of the required curriculum. The committee of members have been meeting since this past summer to draft their recommendations for the updated TEKS for English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR).
We've been waiting to hear and see what the committee has drafted, and today is that day. This morning TEA released their first recommendations to the TEKS. As you all know, the math TEKS updates were not popular with educators, parents, or even the communities. The ELAR TEKS seem to be a lot different from the current TEKS we are using but not as scary as the math updates.
This is your time as an educator to review and comment on these changes. TEA is taking comments until Monday, January 25th. I know you guys are all very busy, but I would highly recommend you looking them over and leaving comments. This is your time to have a say and to be the educator's voice for the standards we are expecting students to know and master.

If you are sending comments and/or recommendations make sure to identify the grade level and the specific student expectation number that is included in the draft recommendation document. e.g., grade 1 (1)(A)
My First Impressions
Here is what I noticed as I have looked them over today.
- Figure 19 has disappeared but is located inside the standards now under comprehension.
- ELAR Process Standards are listed under everyone's strand 2.
- All reading comprehension skills are listed across multiple genres...FINALLY!
- There are only 8 knowledge strands to the 23-26 we are used to teaching students.
- More streamed lined and appropriate for the grade levels.
