A Note From Mr. Delp

December is here and as always, it generates a great deal of anticipation and excitement for our students as they look forward to a break.

This year, our last day of the semester will be Thursday, December 16. The final two days of the semester -- Wednesday and Thursday -- are reserved for finals and they are early release days. Students will be dismissed at 1:04 pm. Per district policy, students are not permitted to take finals early. If a student is absent on the day of finals, their grade will initially be recorded as a zero, but they will be permitted to make-up the test upon their return in January (without penalty).

There is still time for students to receive academic assistance if needed. Each of our teachers offers tutoring and we will have Homework Hub on Monday through Thursday of next week. If your child needs support, please encourage them to take advantage of these opportunities.

Junior high school comes with it's share of challenges, but each day I get small reminders to be grateful for the opportunity I have to work with our kids. They make me laugh, keep me humble, and remind me to be young at heart. Thank you for your support of your student and our school.

Please Help: Free and Reduced Lunch Applications

Recently, a letter was sent home with students of families who may not have completed a free and reduced lunch application. We are encouraging all of our families to complete this form. It will ensure that students receive lunch assistance (as needed) and a portion of our school funding is based upon the percentage of our student population that qualifies for free and reduced lunch.

WJHS ELL Class Organizes Fundraiser

Students in the ELD Program at Willis Junior High School recently read the book, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park. The story tells about the Lost Boys of Sudan and the dire water situation that still exists there. It didn’t take long for students to act and hold a fundraiser for the foundation Water for South Sudan. The foundation was created by the main character of the story, Salva Dut, one of the Lost Boys who relocated to the USA. The WJHS students raised over three-hundred dollars that will go for water pumps at the Water for South Sudan organization. If anyone is interested in learning more about the group, their details can be found at the link below.

Firebird Athletics Spotlight

This week we would like to highlight a few members of our Cross Country team. Ethan B. tries his very best at every practice and meet. He has a positive mindset and encourages others to do their best. Reagan S. has an athletic drive no other. She is playing both club volleyball and running Cross Country for WJHS. She is determined to be the best athlete she can be. Leonardo V. is very committed to cross country. He truly makes it his own race and you can see he is enjoying himself. He never stops running and keeps on running regardless of the obstacles thrown his way. Keiserinne L. is a powerhouse runner. She is consistently trying to improve her time at each meet. Her smile can be seen from across the field. Come out and support all of our runners on Tuesday, November 23 here at Willis. Races start at 4:30. Go Firebirds!!!

What's Happening in the World of Math

Did you know that some Willis teachers are participating in the ASU Math Momentum Project and they are finding huge success? At a recent Math Department meeting a presentation from ASU was made about the district Mathspace program. ASU presenters shared some really great tools and resources that teachers who are not participating in Math Momentum can also use, specifically intervention templates and tools. Ms. Smith and Ms. Wiese are coordinating on ways Mathspace can be used in strategies classes, and as a progress monitoring tool for Willis students. This will only help all students find success in math. We are proud of this partnership with ASU. Go Firebirds and Go Devils!!!
