Sustainable living resident immersion course
Accommodations - 3 plant based meals are provided daily. Covered above ground tent platforms are included (BYOT) and cabins are available on a first come basis for an additional $600 per month. Click here to view cabins.
Subjects include:
· Tropical permaculture – Students will have access to all our study materials including some select handout excerpts and pdf files. They will also participate daily in the care and maintenance of our 30 plus cultivated acres of tropical permaculture systems.
· Agro-forestry – In 2010 and 2012 our 150-acre property was visited by a group comprised of local ethno-Botanists and Bushmen helping us identify, inventory and tag all known useful plants and trees. Of course our permaculture and food forest system is developing within this native semi-rainforest as well. This winter semester (2016-2017) students will join that same group as we once again perform this identification and update process.
· Natural Farming – Using our natural farming methods we currently keep at least 12 acres dedicated to growing local crops including the 3 sisters style corn, beans, and squash. Now and then we also grow organic brown rice. During the end of the rainy season (Dec – March) we prepare for crops to be planted in early May – June. Students will learn and experience these methods and natural systems. Annual perennial crops and maintenance include coco-yam, cassava, pineapple, plantain, banana, etc.
· Water shed management and restoration – Our water resources are comprised of a seasonal creek, springs, and water harvest systems. Each year we add more natural water retention and storage systems such as ponds, keylines, swales, etc. Students will participate in building and maintaining these systems.
· Natural Building – Using Earthship style construction methods this year we will be building 3 new cabins from recycled plastic bottles! Students will have access to the Earthship book series and participate in the hands on builds.
· General natural and healthy sustainable off-grid living - In addition to the above mentioned specific subjects, our students will no doubt gain an enormous amount of sustainable knowledge and experience while living a month or longer on our off grid property. Daily conversations and experiences may include subjects like solar system basics and maintenance, water systems and plumbing, natural building, healthy diet and nutrition, and the list goes on and on!
Come join the fun and learn how to make the sustainable healthy changes you are seeking to transform your life!
