Rykers' Ridge Learning Commons
Creativity, Curiosity, Innovation
November/December 2016
It's already December. How'd THAT happen? It has been SO BUSY...at school and at home! Here's what has been going on in the Learning Commons. LEGOs, 3D printing, and the Hour of Code took over our space.
We wish you a very happy holiday season!
Thank you,
Mrs. Stevenson and Ms. Schmitt
3D Printing Challenge
3D printing in the classroom allows students to imagine, design, and build their own ideas. And while the tangible object is significant, it is important to note that the design process is where so much of the learning takes place. 3D printing teaches students: math and spatial reasoning-navigating 3D design environment, designing on all sides (X, Y, and Z), alignment tools, geometric shape building, dividing and combining, measurement tools, scale, ratio, rotating, and mirroring.
Hour of Code
Below are some of the activities students completed.
Disney's Moana
Join Moana and Maui in an adventure game while learning all about loops, conditionals, and the fundamentals of code.
Minecraft
Use blocks of code to take Alex or Steve on an adventure through this Minecraft world.
Kodable
LEGO Bits and Bricks
Google Santa Tracker
https://santatracker.google.com/village.html
Use Google Santa Tracker to follow Santa Claus on Google Maps as he makes his journey around the world.
Word of the Month: Perseverance
ClassDojo released a video series on perseverance. What a great lesson to teach our kids.
Taken from ClassDojo site.
In a follow-up to the wildly popular Growth Mindset series, ClassDojo and Stanford University's PERTS research center created a three episode video series about perseverance, including a concept called "The Dip." This board includes the popular series as well as accompanying activities to help students' learn the power of perseverance and what it looks like in real life!
HAVE A WONDERFUL WINTER BREAK!
