ANNOUNCEMENTS
We have a new Superintendent
Dr. Josephine Yeboah Van-Ess
Superintendent of Queens South High Schools
Dr. Van-Ess is a systems leader with the distinct honor of serving within the New York City Department of Education for the past 15 years, gaining 3k-12th grade teaching and leadership experience. She has served as a middle school English teacher, a middle school Assistant Principal, a high school Principal, and a Community School Deputy Superintendent, serving diverse communities such as Queens Village, Harlem, East Flatbush, and Brownsville. With robust experience in enhancing leadership capacity, data analysis, strategic planning, and community relations, Dr. Van-Ess has improved her district's ability to create a culture of change through collaboration. She has established structures such as Data Chats, State of the District Townhalls, Principal to Principal Collegial Networking Cohorts, and Co- Leadership tenets and values amongst leadership teams.
Dr. Van- Ess is a leader who dedicates her effort and time to cultivating learning communities that are grounded in equitable practices, systems, and structures to ensure all students are successful and afforded meaningful and transferable learning experiences. Dr. Van-Ess' top priorities are to drive school and community wellness, success, and achievement. Thus, she prioritizes professional learning and working with innovative partnerships to support the district's vision, mission, goals, and initiatives.
Dedicated to being a learner, in December 2021, she earned her doctorate degree, focusing her study on the professional development needs of principals and the multigenerational workforce. In May 2022, she completed the NYCDOE's Ed Pacesetter, engaging in researching and providing recommendations to enhance family empowerment.
Personally, Dr. Van-Ess is a wife and a mother of a three-year-old named, Lyric. Being raised in South Jamaica, Queens, Dr. Van-Ess has an intrinsic commitment to the schools of Queens South, considering her appointment as
Superintendent an honor, a privilege, and an opportunity to give back to the community that helped to shape the woman she is today.
The Edison Community welcomes Superintendent Dr. Josephine Yeboah Van-Ess and we wish her much success in her new role.

Parent Coordinator Mariela Chevry
It's been a longtime since Edison has had a Parent Coordinator. Finally, we have found the right fit for our school.
Since 2018, Mariela Chevry has been a Parent Coordinator (often shortened to PC) within the NYC Department of Education. Before joining our school community at Edison, Mariela worked with families at an elementary school. In her time as PC, she has learned the value of committing to families by keeping the lines of communication constantly open. With that being said, she encourages families to call her, email her, and come to speak to her if they have any questions, concerns, or help.
Having been born, raised, and still living in Jamaica, Queens, she understands the heartbeat of the community she serves. As a Thomas A. Edison CTE High School graduate, she also understands the significance of a strong college and career readiness foundation. She is excited to serve her community and thrilled to work alongside the Edison students, families, administration, teachers, and staff.
Together we will accomplish spectacular things!

ONLINE GRADE BOOK, ATTENDANCE, & MESSAGING
We can no longer able to utilize PupilPath/Skedula as per the NYCDOE due to the security breach that took place last year. Therefore, we will be implementing the new Gradebook, Attendance & Messaging Applications that were created by the NYC DOE.
Below you will find information on how to access each of the applications.
Teachers can create and grade assignments while maintaining all data fully secure and within the DOE.
Teachers can import assignments from our school’s Learning Management System, [iLearn/Google Classroom], meaning that teachers will not have to do duplicate data entry.
Students will be able to see assignments and assignment-level grades from the DOE Grades application in TeachHub in the fall.
Parents will be able to see assignments and assignment-level grades in the NYC Schools Account (NYCSA) Portal in the fall.
DOE Attendance is an electronic attendance tool.
Families already have access to their child’s attendance in NYC Schools Account (NYCSA) Portal.
Teachers and school administrators will be able to quickly and securely update student attendance throughout the day.
The new DOE Messaging application offers multiple methods for outreach to families, such as voice calls, emails, and SMS texts.
Our school staff will be able to send families messages by course/class, by grade, or even to the entire school.
Messages can be sent in English and the nine DOE languages
