As this is the first film awards started in India, it is said to be second best after the Oscars. Initially, it was named Clare awards after film critic of Times group Miss Clare Mendonca and the trophy was called as Clare just like its western counterpart was called as Oscar. The filmfare award design that has a dancing Lady in Black was designed by N G Pansare along with Prof. Walter Langhammer, head of Art dept. of The Times Group. The statue was designed as a dancer lost to tune of music, was made of bronze and weighed around 5 kgs. These personalised trophies are the Oscar for Bollywood.
Interestingly many awards functions are held by reputed business houses and corporates and many star trophies are given away, but none have a match to Filmfare.
