LSC Election Update
December 2, 2020
I wanted to share an update on the LSC Election results, as a follow up to my email last night, please note the following:
- Yesterday I received concerns from several members of the community indicating that there was a high number of invalid votes in this election cycle.
- After hearing these concerns I reached out to the Office of Local School Council Relations who sent a district representative to Peirce this morning to begin looking into this.
Preliminary findings from the district indicate that there were 136 ballots initially labeled as defective. It is unclear why the election judge (not a Peirce staff member) did not include those ballots in their count. Of those 136 ballots:
- 75 ballots were received by the school prior to the November 18th election deadline in envelopes, properly marked with family name and address, those ballots remain unopened. The Office of Local School Council Relations will be re-considering whether or not these ballots should be included in the overall count and a final decision will be shared with the school.
- 4 ballots were staff ballots which were improperly completed
- 33 ballots were submitted without an envelope, name/address on the envelope
- 3 ballots were improperly marked with checks instead of "X"
- 15 ballots did not have return information on the envelope
- 6 ballots were postmarked after November 18th.
So what now?
- I am waiting to hear from the district on what will be done with the 75 ballots noted above and will share the district's decision once it is made.
- Based on the updated LSC Timeline, members of the community have the ability to challenge the election results which would need to be completed by 5pm on Thursday, December 3rd. Link to challenge form
- The Local School Council will still convene a special meeting at 7pm on Thursday, December 3rd to certify the results (this would have happened regardless of this new information). In consultation with the district rep, certifying does not mean that the council is in agreement with the results, only that the data was shared with the council. I have invited the district rep to attend the meeting and they will be available to answer any questions related to the election.
Please reach out with any questions - I am committed to being transparent with the information I receive and believe in the importance of communication. As we learned during the recent presidential election, it is important that every vote that was made correctly is counted.
