Message from Mrs. Bowers
Dear Woodin Families,
I hope this newsletter finds you healthy and safe during these challenging times. I continue to think about you!
As we've spent more and more time away from school, I have heard from parents expressing many feelings: fear or guilt about your child falling behind, frustration over your child not being willing to do school work at home, sheer exhaustion of working from home yourself while trying to care for and manage learning for your children, and/or worry about providing for the basic needs of your family. Trust me, you are not alone! Please prioritize the relationships in your family and your emotional well-being over following a rigid learning schedule.
Related to that, I want to share with you a quote with you that I saw on the “Teacher Goals” page on Facebook: “If I can leave you with one thing, it’s this: at the end of all of this, your kids’ mental health will be more important than their academic skills. And how they felt during this time will stay with them long after the memory of what they did during those four or more weeks is long gone.”
Please continue to take care of yourself, your family, and others around you. Check in on those who may be living on their own, write a letter to the grandparents, and embrace this time, while not chosen, as a time to slow down and honor the time with each other. When we do go back to moving around town and back to school, what is it about this time that you would like to hold onto?
Everything we are all doing right now is hard! Do the best you can and give yourself (and those around you) grace. We are all doing what we are doing in a crisis situation and it isn’t normal. We are all experiencing loss and a huge disruption of our routines. It is okay to NOT be amazing. We will continue to do our best, too! We are here, alongside you, just a few clicks away, and know that we care so much about our Woodin children and families.
Fondly,
Dawn Bowers
Thank You PTA!
Thinking of you all!

Field Day - Note from our PE Team
Woodin Field Day 2020!!!
Dear Woodin Wildcats, Families and Staff - Woodin Field Day 2020 is coming in June!
Field Day is an important tradition at our school. It is a significant day for our students and our staff, and we feel that in these incredibly challenging times this school event is a unique way that we can stay connected as a community and support one another in a fun and meaningful way.
Look for exciting news and information coming the week of May 18th explaining all the details for the upcoming event. There will be 15 activities/events - 5 different events will be released each Friday, June 5, 12, 19 - and we invite all Woodin students and families along with Woodin Staff to participate! All Woodin Field Day events are designed to be done indoors or outdoors using common household items.
We can't wait to hear about all the fun new memories created and see the photos you share!
Go Wildcats!
Message from our Counselor
Hi Woodin Families,
During remote learning there have been a rise of new challenges that we are facing as families. One of the new challenges is the concerns surrounding children having big feelings. Research has shown that one of the most effective ways of managing big feelings is to have discussions about them when the child is calm and not experiencing any of the big emotions. These discussions include both recognizing the big feelings and managing the big feelings.
At school, we have a curriculum that is called Second Steps. Second Steps is a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum. The goal of a SEL curriculum is to increase self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and to problem solve. Teachers throughout the year have taught Second Step and other SEL lessons with your students. The need for students to learn SEL has not diminished in this time of Covid-19. In fact, I would argue that the need for SEL is more important than ever.
I wanted to present to you a way in which you can teach SEL lessons at home. On my website I will be posting lessons from Second Steps that you can be doing at home with your students. These lessons will include a video and a family discussion guide. There are lessons for each grade level. Please take a look at these videos and see if it something you would like to implement at home. Mr. Taylor’s Second Step Page.
As always, if you have any questions, thoughts or concerns, please feel free to contact me at ataylor@nsd.org.
Thank you,
Adam Taylor
