Kidz First
A Ministry of Cullman First United Methodist Church
Bazillion Book Drive
During the month of May, First United Methodist Church of Cullman will be participating in the Bazillion Book Drive. Help us collect new books that target children Kindergarten through 3rd Grade. The books collected at our church will be donated to local tutoring programs and schools serving children at risk. Why are we collecting books?
- Children with reading difficulties are more likely to drop out of school and remain in the cycle of poverty
- 85% of all Juvenile offenders have reading problems
- In middle income neighborhoods, the ratio of books to child is 13 to 1
- In low income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age appropriate book for every 300 children
- In our own county, there are school children who rely on the school library for and and all access to books. During the summer months, that access is not available.
- According to Better Basics, low-income students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in reading skills over the summer months. More than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities
Help us make a difference in the life of a child....one book at a time!
