The Tragedy of Macbeth

Macbeth's Downfall

The person I think is responsible for Macbeth's downfall is Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth tries to convince Macbeth to commit murder after she gets the letter from him and reads that the witches had prophesied that Macbeth would be king. Lady Macbeth tells him, "O, never Shall sun that morrow see! Your face, my Thane, is as a book where men May read strange matters. To beguile the time, Look like the time; ear welcome in your eye, Your hand, your tongue; look like the innocent flower, But be the serpent under't" ( Act 1.5.70-77). Macbeth agrees to the plan, but when he sees Duncan that night he begins to have second thoughts, saying, "We will proceed no further in this business. He hath honored me of late, and I have bought golden opinions from all sorts of people" ( Act 1.7.35-37). Lady Macbeth confronted Macbeth with a series of insults, in my opinion trying to anger him into doing something he doesn't want to do just so she can become queen, telling him, "Art thou afeard to be the same in thine own act of valor... And live a coward in thine own self esteem, letting "I dare not" wait upon "I would," Like a poor cat I' the adage" (Act 1 .7.45-50). I believe, she trying to get him to do something he doesn't want to do or believe is right. But when Macbeth finally gives in and kills Duncan he is afraid of what he has done and starts hearing voices in his head, "Methought I heard a voice cry "Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep"- the innocent sleep,... I'll go no more. I am afraid to think what I have done; Look on't again I dare not" (Act 2.2.51-71). All the voices lead him to be unsure and afraid. I believe Lady Macbeth convinced Macbeth to murder for her own self promotion which altered his thoughts, leading him to go crazy and spiral downward to his own self destruction.
