Community Update: Week of Oct. 3rd
Sharing information for the Wootton High School Community
Interested in learning more about the Montgomery County Board of Education’s updated school-naming policy?
Dear Wootton High School Community:
Students, parents and families, staff, and alumni are invited to attend an information meeting for Thomas Wootton High School to learn about the Montgomery County Board of Education’s updated school naming policy.
Through historical research of school names conducted in 2019, the Board identified six schools in which to determine community interest in renaming, including our school, due to their namesakes being persons and/or related to families who had enslaved people. If school communities request to be renamed, the Board will consider their requests using the new process in Policy FFA: Naming School Facilities. (Approved, June 2022.)
Please note that the Board will only consider renaming any school after members of the school community submit a petition, the petition has been approved by the Board and community members participates in community engagement processes. The Board is not renaming any schools at this point.
Information sessions are being held at each of these six school communities to inform community members about the updated policy, the research about the namesake and the process to submit a petition to ask the Board to start the renaming.
Information sessions will be held via Zoom, as listed below and an flyer with additional details is below and will be emailed to you. Please note, interpreters will be made available if needed.
- Date: Thursday, October 13, 2022
- Time: the meeting begins at 6:30pm
- Where: Zoom webinar

Only students in Grade 11 that paid the $19 fee for the assessment before September 12, 2022, are registered for the assessment. This date was the College Board's deadline to order PSAT/NMSQT test materials.

SSL Opportunities for Students
The Montgomery County Board of Elections is seeking school-age students, to serve as Election Day student aides. Its main goal is to increase civic participation and knowledge of the political process. Serving as a student election aide gives students their first exposure to the actual logistics of the democratic process in the United States. Students leave the program with experience in how elections are set up and a greater understanding of and trust in American democracy. Student election aides are not offered any monetary compensation, but they are given Student Service Learning (SSL) hours for every hour they work.
