Personal Statement

Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to be a teacher, I feel a great sense of fulfillment working and helping others. Throughout my life I have worked alongside children teaching swimming and dancing where my passion for teaching has developed. My rural upbringing has shaped my ‘can do’ attitude, hardworking behaviors and my community spirit. My career objective is to secure a teaching job in a primary or secondary school where I can enhance my curriculum expertise in religious studies, drama and history, build a safe learning environment and continue to develop my teaching philosophy and approach.

Teaching Profile

Emerging Teaching Philosophy: Through academic, school-based and work experience I am a passionate and motivated teacher. I build intrinsic motivation through creating project based learning experiences and positive relationships with my students. In my first years of teaching I will develop my philosophy of teaching through mentorship, creativity and constant reflection.

Primary and Secondary Trained: I have experience teaching in both primary and secondary schools. Therefore, I am able to teach extension students in my specialist curriculum areas. My knowledge, experience and understanding of the entire education curriculum is a strength.

Performing Arts Focus: I have completed a minor in Theatre in my Bachelor of Arts degree, specialist dance and drama curriculum studies in primary and secondary school as well as seventeen years of experience in the performing arts outside of the classroom. I am passionate about the performing arts and keen to use my skills and experiences to contribute to the school community; whether this be stage challenge, productions or other performing arts activities.

History Curriculum Strength: I have a major in History in my degree focusing primarily on New Zealand History. I am interested in making New Zealand History contemporary and motivating.

Knowledge of Mathematics: I have completed a University Statistics paper, have had experience in a secondary classroom teaching junior mathematics, as well as tutored an NCEA mathematics. Through tutoring I enjoyed creating practical learning experiences.

Catholic Education Studies: I am currently studying towards my Certificate in Catechetical Studies; therefore providing me with an understanding of Catholic Education. I have had experience teaching religious studies at secondary level.

"Miss Todd adapts the lesson if we are not understanding and simplifies things. Has different activities to do so the lesson is interesting, also is always positive when teaching us and always has a smile on her face. Overall a lovely teacher to have and I would love to be taught by her again." - Year 13 Student at Villa Maria College
