Weekly Academics
Reading Street:
•Question of the Week; “How are real and make-believe plants alike and different?”
•Amazing words: beanstalk, lend, magic, ogre, lad and naughty
•We recognized and named uppercase and lowercase letter: Ii, Mm, Cc, Pp, Tt, Ss and Aa
•Identified initial and final sounds within various words
•High- frequency words: I, am, the, little, to, a, have, is, we, like, me, he and for
•Realism vs. Fantasy
•Created a story using sequencing words like beginning, middle and end
•Adjectives and verbs
•Used our “rubber bands” to help sound out CVC words
•Some of our favorite books that we read are Jack and the Beanstalk, One Mitten , Chasing Shadows, Squirrel's New Year's Resolution and Happy New Year!
Handwriting:
•Reviewed headline, midline and baseline
•Practiced writing uppercase and lowercase letters Ii, Ss, Aa, Mm, Tt, Pp and Cc
•Helpful strategies when writing (finger spacing, capital letters, punctuation)
*We began Writer’s Workshop this week. My goal for this week was to immerse the students in EXPERT books about animals. In the weeks to come, we will read expert books about activities, foods and hobbies. I am looking forward to our partnership in the upcoming weeks regarding Writer's Workshop.

Social Studies/Science:
•Happy New Year everyone! This week we talked about the activities we did over winter break. We also discussed resolutions. The students had to identify something they want to work toward for this year! We also began to learn about shadows!
SEL: We continue to sit as a class and place ourselves somewhere on the Mood Meter. This month we will discuss the words “fair” and “brave”.
Our library trip was so fun. The students were so excited to explore the library and pick out a book. We also began to introduce the Microsoft tablets to the students. Stay tuned for some exciting things.
