Should College Athletes Be Paid?

Myles Vaughn

Thesis

I think college athletes should be paid because those college athletes put in just as much work as the pro's and they have to handle just as much personal stuff as the pro's.

Background Information

Athletes work hard on and off the field by doing good in their sport and in the classroom which deserves a pay out of it. College athletes are being televised just as much as the pros and they should be paid because they are putting their talents out there. The college athletes are just like regular students by learning in the classroom and handling personal stuff outside of school. These athletes work just as hard as the pros and handle as much stuff as they do in their career. The rules are no far different from the pros, and they are just the same like the penalties and drug tests.

Text Evidence and Commentary #1

In the article the author says, "The governing body of big-time college sports, the NCAA, is caught in a huge contradiction--trying to reconcile a multibillion-dollar industry while claiming it is really an amateur activity."

I picked this quote because this tells that the college athletes are being televised on television showing how good they are and putting a lot of work in and they are not getting paid. This shows that they are putting a lot of work in to be televised and should be paid.

Text Evidence and Commentary #2

In the article D. Stanley Eitzen says "The governing body of big-time college sports, the NCAA, is caught in a huge contradiction--trying to reconcile a multibillion-dollar industry while claiming it is really an amateur activity."

I chose this one because the NCAA is a multi-billion-dollar industry just like the pro's and the athletes in both work just as hard as each other.

Text Evidence and Commentary #3

The author says in this article "College athletes should, must and will be entitled to as much money as they can latch onto. JUST LIKE REAL STUDENTS."

I chose this because college athletes should be entitled as much money as they can because they are just like regular college students.

Text Evidence and Commentary #4

Gordon Witkin and Jodi Schneider says"The compliance systems are best at limiting the inadvertent rule breaches.."

I chose this quote because the rules of the college level are no far different from the professional rules and the punishment for breaking them are just the same between them two.

Text Evidence and Commentary #5

In this article the author says "Whenever a question really matters in college or career, it is not enough just to give an answer,"

I chose this quote because it tells that college students and athletes have no difference from the professional athlete and working career, those college athletes and students have to work just as hard as the professionals do.

Counterargument

Some people say college athletes should not get paid because they are not like the professionals and do not handle as much as them in their outside lives. The college athletes need to improve their intensity on the field like the pros and need to develop the skills necessary to compete at the pro level. The other thing is that the college athletes need to improve their academic performances in the classroom to even think about getting paid for their sport.
