How Close are Humans to Cure Cancer

Deyi's Inquiry Question

Humans and their attempt to find a cure for cancer.

Cancer is one of the disease that not many people survive. It can be treated but still researchers are still working to this very day to find a cure to end cancer for good. Cancer is a disease of altered expression, the uncontrolled of the genes (TED). Within ourselves we have DNA that communicated with mRNA. But the small molecules that circulates in our blood is called microRNA. It regulates gene expressions. Jorge Soto is a researcher that created with his colleges a device that can detect cancer with just one milliliter of your blood. The device will analyze the blood sample in search of specific microRNAs that are associated with any type of cancer. It will match it up and tells how many microRNAs are present and how they react over time. It will match up patterns with a cancer or disease. This process last up to 60 minutes. With this low cost and 3D printed device, we can detect cancer early and cure it. David Agus stated that “if we slow the disease, we may have more of a benefit on patient survival”. Detecting the cancer at its early stages could be the easiest way to cure cancer besides of using the drugs and treatment.

Can The Change of Diet Help Cure Cancer?

Have you ever thought about that the change of your diet plans can help or even cure cancer? Extensive research published in the last decade proves that what you eat can have a profound effect on a protection against cancer. Some foods block natural bodily processes like inflammation that fuels cancers. That’s good to change your diet and add a little more greens and well fruits and vegetables that are healthy but don’t normally eat it. Green tea is a good beverage to drink that is rich in compounds called polyphenols, including catechins, that reduce that growth of new blood vessels that feeds tumor. Its also a powerful antioxidant and detoxifier. In the laboratory, it has even been shown to increase the effect of radiations on cancer cells. Pomegranate juice has been used in Persian medicine for thousands of years. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that reduce the development of the most aggressive prostate cancers. Ginger root is a very powerful anti-inflammatory that fights of certain cancers cells, helps slow tumor growth. It can also alleviate nausea from chemo and radiotherapy (David. Prevention). It's even good to start adding more greens to your diet like brussel sprouts, bok choy, chinese cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower. They all contain sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinols, and two potent anticancer molecules that help detoxify the body. Also helps prevent precancerous cells from forming into malignant tumors (David. Prevention). There are a lot more foods that can help your prevent and cure cancer if you just eat right.

How Can Treatment/Testing be Useful?

Within the next decade, cancer is likely to replace heart disease as the leading cause of death. It’s already the biggest killers for those under the age of 75 even for children (The War on Cancer). But there are many ways that you can get treated or tested for cancer. Which are all helpful and useful. The patient get screening done like mammograms but depending on the cancer. Each cancer requires different testing and treatments. Patients could go through chemo and radiotherapy to help shrink the tumor and maintain its malignancy. $64 billion dollars per year is spent on treatment (The War on Cancer). Oncologist can also do surgery on the patient as well to remove the tumor and then start therapy. Clinical trials are also an option for you. You can test out the treatment that they provide you and you give them feedback on which treatment work best for you. There are many types of therapy like immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and hormone therapy (National Cancer Institute). All can be used depending on the cancer. All of these therapies and treatments are helpful to shrink down the tumor. But they are side effects when doing the treatments. They’re not severe side effect. It may include hair loss, anemia, fatigue, appetite loss and more. But these side effects vary on every person even if they have the same treatment. Besides that, it is useful to help cure cancer.

Early Detection and Prevention Could be the Cure.

Early detection can greatly increases the chances for successful treatment. For the successful treatment can lead to a cure to cancer. Two components of the early detection is the education to promote early diagnosis and screening. The screening is use of simple tests across a healthy population in order to identify individuals who have a disease. It’s relevant to breast, cervix, mouth, larynx, colon and rectal, and skin (WHO). For women who has or have had breast cancer would do a mammogram. For cervical cancer, oncologist would use cytology screening methods, including pap smears. They are at least one third of all cancer cases are preventable. Prevention offers the most cost effective long term strategy for the control of cancer. They many risk factors that causes or leads to cancer. For instance, tobacco use causes an estimated 22% of cancer death per year (WHO). Alcohol use are a risk factor to many cancer types. If we stop the use of these risk factors than it can be prevented. All cancers can be prevented by just stop using the bad chemicals. Cancers can also be detected early by doing daily pep smears or mammograms. Some doctors highly recommend for every to get their check up like these to make sure there’s nothing wrong or if there is something wrong then it can be detected and treated right away. By doing this it can be cured in no time.

I think we are close to cure cancer... What do you think?
