Beatles Coming to America

The Beatles were a boy band from England and they came over to America. They made their first appearance on American television on February 9th 1964.

The Beatles changed society for many reasons, one being their hair. The certain long haircut became popular among young men because it symbolized a rebellious child who was going against the social norms of the short haircut their elders wanted them to have. Their music lyrics effected their listeners and fans because I started a revolution of kids they wanted to be rebellious.

Hair Long and Beautiful

Many people, men and women, during the 1960s chose to grow their hair out which was considered to be "long and beautiful"

This changed society because short and kept up neat hair was the social norm and was looked upon as nice and proper and that's the haircut everyone was supposed to have. Many people chose to grow their hair out in protest of the social norm.

Timothy Leary and LSD

Timothy Leary was a professor at Harvard who believed that the use of drugs such as LSD when used under precautions could have the potential to be therapeutic. He experimented with many substances and this created a lot of controversy which got him arrested and eventually led to him being fired.

His experimentation with LSD led him to believe its use was an important means to self-discovery and a substance that would change the world’s consciousness. He had no idea just how true that theory would prove to be. it affected the way Americans use and think about drugs today

The Pill becomes widely avaliable

In 1960 the birth control pill became approved for market sale. By 1964, it was the most popular contraceptive in the country.

The avaliablity of the pill started the "sexual revolution" because it allowed people, especially women to have sexual freedom. This meant that people could have sex without the fear of pregnancy and the burden an unprepared pregnancy brings. this also radically changed the belief that pre marital sex is wrong because many people ignored this idea.

Sydney Poitier comes to Dinner

In 1967 the comedy film was released that was about interracial marriage in a positive way. Which historically had been illegal in the United States and was still illegal in 17 until 12 months before the film was released.

This affected society because in history interracial marriage had been looked down upon and this film portrayed this in a positive way which created a lot of controversy on this idea.

“Hey! Hey! LBJ! How many kids did you kill today?”

During the Vietnam war many people, especially the young, thought the government was approving the death of children not only in South Vietnam but also in the North with the blanket bombing raids that were occurring on almost a daily basis. This chant of the protesters was targeted to particularly hurt President Johnson.

This promoted a lot of protests in the future and made citizens realize that it was their job to make sure their country was at war for the right reasons. It inspired a lot of antiwar movements.

Bull Connor and his fire hoses

was the Commissioner of Public Safety for the city of Birmingham, Alabama during the civil rights movement. His office gave him responsibility to oversee the Birmingham Fire Department . In his actions to impose racial segregation Connor directed the use of fire hoses and police attack dogs against mobs of civil rights advocates, that included the children of many protestors.

This event made him an international symbol of racism and backfired when the brutality was broadcast on national television and caused major social and legal change in the rights of black Americans.

Stonewall Riots

The stone wall riots were a series of violent demonstrations by members of the gay community against a police raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn in New York City.

Very few establishments welcomed openly gay people in the 1950s and 1960s. These events are widely considered to constitute the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States.

Engel v. Vitale

Engel v. Vitale, was landmark supreme court case that ruled it is unconstitutional for state officials have an official school prayer and encourage its students to say it in public schools. The case was brought by the Jewish families of public school students in New York who complained that the voluntary prayer written by the state board to "Almighty God" contradicted their religious beliefs.

This changes society because Engel became the basis for several subsequent decisions limiting government-directed prayer in school.

JFK is Assasinated six weeks after MLK is assassinated

President John F. Kennedy was assassinated only 6 weeks after the civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

This caused a lot of conspiracy theories to be born and also it left the nation hurting because 2 huge leaders were killed.

September 11th 2001

On this day terrorists from the Al Qaeda terrorist group hijacked American airplanes and crashed them into the twin towers in New York City killing thousands of people. This was a shock to the whole nation and changed America forever.

This event is what started the war we have been fighting up to this day against terrorism and united the whole nation to fight back against these awful people. Also this changed our security methods in our airport, also just the mentality of our nation. Before 9/11 nobody could fathom that humans were capable this evil.

The first generation iPhone was released on June 29, 2007. It is a "smart" phone that allows users to do so much more than just phone calls and messaging, the release of this phone changed the industry forever.

Society has changed since the creation of this product because almost every person has an iPhone, it has become such a social norm. All our social media apps are made useful on the iPhone and it has made communication fun easy and no competitor has beat out the iPhone yet.

Sandy Hook Shooting

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred on December 14, 2012, in Newton, Connecticut when 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and 6 adult staff members. The incident was the deadliest mass shootings at a high school or grade school in U.S.

The shooting prompted renewed debate about gun control in the United States, including proposals for making the background check system universal, and banning the sale and manufacture of certain types of semi-automatic firearms. Also promoted much debate about school safety and caused many changes in the safety of public school systems

Barack Obama is elected President

Barack Obama is elected in November of 2008 and is the first African American President of the United States.

This is significant because until the 1960s, some parts of the country were still segregated, yet by 2008, a black (or more accurately, a biracial) candidate could win the presidency. Thus, it can be said that Barack Obama helped to change the way Americans thought about politics and race: black candidates had run before, but were rarely taken seriously.

Google is an online search engine that was created in August of 2004.

The search engine is the symbol of the internet technology for the Millennials. By the end of the 2000s, approximately 2/3 of the users in the world used Google for their search needs. Having created the best search engine ever.
