The Sainz Says:
It has definitely been an exciting start to the school year. Thank you for your support and understanding as we have moved back downtown, went virtual for two weeks, and are still navigating construction at the school site. We can't wait for the day when we are able to welcome families back into our beautiful building to see the updates and work that has been completed.
We have our first Virtual Family Night on Thursday, October 28, at 6:00 p.m. (The zoom link is below. Students will have devices at home to be able to join in for the fun).
Data conferences will be held on Tuesday, November 2. Families will have the option of completing these in-person or via Zoom. Your child's teacher will be reaching out to you soon. Our goal is 100% attendance.
As an Accelerated School we are working with a new English Language Arts curriculum that engages students around rigorous work and engaging and motivating topics. It has been exciting to see students work and make progress with this work. We can't wait to see the amazing things they continue to do.
We also have added Science back into the school day. Students have the opportunities to research, do experiments, and work within the Green Heart gardens.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Mitchell Elementary at 843-724-7261 or email me at amber_sainz@charleston.k12.sc.us.

Kindergarten
September has been a very busy and exciting month for our kindergarteners. As we settle in the school year we have begun to take on more leadership roles in both the classroom and school building.
In EL we worked on our communication skills with friends and teachers. We practiced listening, taking turns to talk and using complete sentences. We also learned how to use attributes to describe our favorite toys and manipulatives around the room
Our science topic this month was weather. Students identified and explored the characteristics of the various types of weather. We discussed the many ways the weather affects our school day.
In math we have been counting our days in school ,identifying shapes and the patterns they make, counting numbers on a ten frame and counting to one hundred by tens!
First Grade
First Grade is off to a great start in September! We have been reviewing our procedures and expectations and working hard to earn Shark Teeth throughout the building.
-In Reading we are using a program called EL. It has been fun learning about different types of tools people all over the world use. We have completed several challenges and are currently working on completing our first Mission. The class is Collaborating to create Magnificent Things.
-In Math we are using the Bridges Math curriculum and have been learning to use number racks, ten frames, dominoes and double flap cards to show numbers up to 10. We are having fun using Work Places to explore math through games and activities.
-We will grow different types of grass in Science and record our observations weekly.
Second Grade
Bridges: In math, students have been working on addition and subtraction within 20. We are transitioning into finding the place value of the hundreds, tens, and ones in a three digit number. Students are reviewing daily skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
EL: In EL our students are working hard to learn about different types of schools all around the World! We are learning about other cultures, other countries as well as differences and similarities to our schools here. The students are using what they are learning about schools around the world to find problems, solutions and use their own voice to speak up about how we can be equitable and change issues we see while learning!
Social Studies: Students have been learning about what the different parts of a Community are and how we can be good members of our current community!
Science: Students will be learning about Force & Motion through creating their own designs creating friction using pushes and pulls!
Third Grade
In ELA students have been working hard looking at the learning challenges others face across the world. Students will now be focusing on their own learning challenges and ways to overcome them. We have been practicing our writing and revising our writing.
In math students are starting to learn strategies on multiplication. Two ways students can multiply are by using repeated addition and skip counting. Our scholars are working hard in math to be able to learn more multiplication facts!
In science students have been working on classifying and identifying rocks and minerals. Students conducted their first science experiment where they tested the hardness of various minerals.

Music
All music classes K thru 5th grade lessons were on the various musical instruments of the Orchestra. The students experienced music of the orchestra through various infographics, videos, and live demonstrations. We finished up the unit by having students view Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, where they had to aurally and visually identify various instruments used to tell the story.
